I've noticed some ladies on this board asking you questions about their pets. I was wondering if you could answer one of mine?
I have a dog who's turning 12 years old this July. He's been suffering some really bad hot spots lately. The vet we've seen says he has allergies, though they can't say what he's allergic to. He's so miserable, he scratches himself raw and bleeding. My mom has been giving him Benadryl in a slice of hot dog every morning, and she says it's been helping but he still scratches sometimes.
Is there anything else I can do for my pooch? I feel so bad for him.
Re: Dear PetDoc,
He's been eating the same brand of dog food since he was young. And over the last year, we've stopped giving him most table scraps. They just don't agree with him anymore.
I might schedule him a vet visit for next week to see what they say. I want him to be more comfortable.
He's a mutt. The only thing I know is there is some breed of herding dog in his lineage. Maybe sheltie collie?
He likes Ol Roy dog food. We've tried other brands, and Ol Roy is the only one he'll eat. The one time we bought him a really good dog food, he turned his nose up at it and ate the cats' food!
He LOVES to roll in the grass. He eats it, too, though if I see him doing it, I tell him to stop. He's been doing it since he was a pup and it's never seemed to bother him before. =( Maybe old age is catching up to him?
Agreed!! Change his food!!!
I realize Ol Roy isn't the best brand, but to everybody who says change my dog's food, it isn't that simple or easy. We have tried other types of dog food for him. Some were rather expensive. He won't eat anything else, and if he doesn't have his dog food, he eats the cats' food which only makes him fat because of the much higher protein content.
I'll be at my parents' next week, so I think I'm going to schedule him a vet appointment and see what they say.
PetDoc, thanks for your response and all the good information! I'll try some of your suggestions and see if they work for Buddy.
