breathable bumpers & sitting

So I was looking at breathable bumpers because DD is always moving around and she's finally using a crib and she immediately gets her legs & arms caught in the slats. I read though that they shouldn't be used if baby can sit unassisted - she isn't pulling herself into a seated position yet but I think she would try if she could get her arms on something to push with.

Should I let her figure out the crib situation and that it's not a good idea to stick her legs out or give the bumpers a chance? I don't want to waste $30 on them though if she's just going to pull them down.

Re: breathable bumpers & sitting

  • We have the breathable bumpers, DD does very well with them. I was afraid of her pulling down the bumpers, so I just double tied it where I could. I personally recommend them, definitely gives me peace of mind knowing that she is not getting caught in the slats.

  • Everyone I know who has them hates them because babies who kick and flail in their sleep push right over the breathable bumper and still get their arms and/or legs stuck. DS was waking up screaming all the time with his leg stuck through his crib rail or his head smashed into the side. I finally just put regular bumpers in and they have helped SO much. He can roll both ways, hold himself up for an extended period of time, and I have a Snuza so I'm not worried.
  • We used a breathable bumper for DD and liked it. She never pulled it down or got her limbs over it. I still have a regular bumper on my crib for DS but will be switching it over soon.

  • We used them with DS1 without any issues whatsoever. Just put them on for DS2 b/c he was already getting limbs stuck and so far no issues with him using them either. I highly recommend them
  • We have them and love them. She never pulls them down, she can't, They are tied and Velcroed to the slats, there is no way she could get them off. I also made sure they are very tight so her feet can't go over them and pull them down.

  • I don't have any bumper on DS2's crib, although I did use regular ones with DS1. He does get his limbs stuck sometimes, but I have no intention on buying something that I can use for such a short period of time.

I think that the guidelines about sitting unassisted might be more about the fact that they are closer to pulling up at that point. You can't use bumpers when they can stand in the crib because they can use them as a step.
