Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Hi there...

I was just wondering if you could tell me a little more about your LO's reaction?  Once he started acting like that, was it all the time?  DS slept fine last night, woke up happy, and has seemed his normal self today.  I did give him more yogurt with breakfast.  I'm wondering if he was just wayyyy overtired yesterday or if this evening the monster will come out again.  That was NOT a pleasant experience for any of us!  My friend is a pediatrician and said unless he gets a rash, obviously bloody stools, or throws up to keep him on his current meal plan at least until Monday.  (Obviously if he gets a fever, won't eat or take fluids, or doing any of those things we would call his pedi to get seen!)  I hate this guessing game.

Also I am wondering if your LO goes to a pediatric allergist?  I see people on the Food Allergy board talking about going to one but from what I've been told testing on babies his age isn't accurate?  So I'm wondering what people do at the allergist with their babies??  I'd love to have some kind of test done to just KNOW if he's allergic or not but both the pedi and GI doctor have said that it wouldn't be accurate at this point.

Thanks for your help!

  • It was pretty gradual. Basically about a week into the challenge, I realized this is NOT my happy-go-lucky guy. The weird thing is he slept well at night (which he never used to do when he was an infant and I had dairy), he just got angrier and angrier. His naps got pretty hit or miss also. Like if he took one he would sleep fine but getting him down was rough. DS never did throw up this time like he used to (again when I used to try dairy from time to time). On one hand, I figure the fact that we went a week with yogurt without puking, waking, and immediate diarrhea must be a good sign, but the fact that we're still dealing with this at 19 months blows.

DS does not see a pediatric allergist yet. At his 18-month check in with the pedi GI, he was scheduled to see an allergist I think around 23 months. The GI did specifically say that it was worthless to go earlier because it would not be accurate. I wish they could just freaking tell me yes or no because DS had a terrible reaction (seizure - worst night of my life) to DTaP at 6 months and we're waiting to figure out if it was an allergy issue as some of the DTaP formulas contain trace amounts of milk protein. Until then he's not getting the booster and I HATE having him unprotected. He was just due for the booster a month ago but with as much time as he spends out at my barn and around my anti-vax neighbor's kid I am really worried about him not being 100% protected from tetanus and whooping cough. All that to say obviously both DS's normal pedi and his GI want him to have his booster ASAP, but both agree that waiting until close to 2 is the best thing to do.

Good luck with your little guy. Let me know if I can be of any more help!
