Re: (Untitled)

  • She is pending diagnosis right now at 2.5, goes for ados in July. We first saw a Developmental Pedi in January who said no way to Autism, and wanted a follow up developmental screen done to get rid of the Developmental Delay diagnosis she originally had from EI/HMG. At the follow up the screener said she will likely end up on the spectrum. She has a vast vocabulary, knows her shapes (hexagon, octagon too), colors, ABCs, can count to and identify numbers upto 25 - has been able to do these things from about 22 months. She now has memorized short board books, can sing songs word for word (RHCP, Elton John, Dropkick Murphys) but her ability/desire to communicate is incredibly stunted.

She has no novel speech, rigid play, visual and verbal stims. Doesn't acknowledge people unless she needs something or its her own idea, happy to play alone for hours reenacting Sesame Street episodes. Its hard to put into words at times but its pretty evident when you see her in person. Shes very content in her own world, she will usually say "hello" to people if told to, but she has no interest in children or adults. We started EI in November and have been doing floortime since then, and are currently starting The paper work/video for P.L.A.Y. Through EI.

The reason the DAN! Dr. Came into conversation was because I had asked OT what they thought of fish oil supplements and they mentioned there was a general practitioner locally that a lot of ASD moms were seeking out. We first attempted to do GFCF but she was already losing weight and the cottage cheese was something I couldn't find a good substitute for. I also understood it to be all or nothing but they encouraged me to cont.  Gluten free as that takes quite a bit longer to get out of the system in comparison to casein. Maybe their logic was that one would already be in place if we were able to shake the last bit of dairy. Im not sure, Im just trying to do the best I can with the information and resources I have available to me now.its hard to find help or anyone who really understands that the child who seems gifted in many ways and sings eloquently in song can't speak a novel sentence and thinks its perfectly okay to lick the windows at Big Boy.

  • This sounds exactly like my son. No formal diagnosis yet but we're suspecting HFA. We do a multi-vitamin and fish oil, both Nordic Naturals. We have noticed reduced tantrums and improved eye contact since starting the fish oil, could be related, maybe not. I am not comfortable with some of the DAN! protocols but would sit down and have DS examined by one if it wasn't so cost prohibitive. The fact that they do not take insurance is an absolute no-go for us.

As far as GF/CF, I am hesitant to implement because DS is already starting to self-limit his foods. He used to be an exceptional eater and I am down to chicken as his only non-dairy protein. He's a tall skinny kid and can't really afford to lose the weight. Luckily, he still loves, and eats, all fruits and veggies.

If you want to go down the biomed road, make sure to do your research. There are a ton of people out there making money off of scared and desperate parents. GL!
