Re: FYI: Product recall, The Nap Nanny

  • Hasn't this thing been recalled like 4 times?

  • I'm not sure... I never bought one because I thought it was overpriced and would be outgrown quickly. But an extended family member loved hers and was persistent in trying to buy one for us since one of my girls had terrible reflux.

From what I read, the manufacturer is no longer in business and the major retailers are "supposed" to refund the consumers their money.... and it's now illegal to sell them anywhere, just like drop side cribs.

    Definitely at least once before.

It's a shame; I know a lot of parents who said these made a huge difference for their babies. i wonder if they could be redesigned to eliminate the safety concerns. Having had refluxy babies, I know how tough it can be to find an "approved" way for them to get a decent night's sleep.

I think a lot of the safety concerns would be eliminated if they weren't being used by stupid parents.  Ok, that sounded harsh but hear me out.  The babies that died while in these where not deaths caused "by the nap nanny".

Parents would put the baby in the nap nanny, then put the nap nanny on the couch...then walk away.  The baby was big enough to be wiggling around and, like babies do when they are older, wiggled around and they ended up falling off the couch which resulted in fatal injuries.

Parents would put the baby in the nap nanny and then put the nap nanny in the crib.  When the baby would wiggle around and tip over, the blankets would smother the baby.

While they are horrific accidents, they were not caused by the nap nanny themselves.  One previous poster was right, the babies outgrow them far too quickly to justify paying full price for them.  HOWEVER, I have 2 of them waiting for my darling babies that were used by a friend of mine, and her sister in law before her.  In their households, the nap nanny was placed on the floor, with the parent nearby doing dishes or folding laundry, or any other chore that allows them to watch the baby.  Once the babies were big enough to move around a lot, they were not put in the nap nanny.  My babies will never be placed on an elevated surface if I am not sitting/standing right there, whether it is a car seat, booster seat or a blanket while changing a diaper. I think too many people heard "nanny" in the name and assumed they can walk away and all will be ok.

The deaths were tragic and horrible, I couldn't imagine the horror those parents went through.  The injuries and deaths were not caused by the product themselves, though.
