Biting all of sudden, almost 3 year old

Hi Ladies, My DS has started biting all of a sudden- past 3 weeks maybe, randomly either biting me, my mother or his baby sister.  DD is almost 1 year old and he hasn't done that to her before and he is biting really really hard.  He bit me today on my chest and I almost bled.  And it wasn't even out of frustration- I was carrying him to my bed out of the bath tub, kissing him telling him how much I love him and he was smiling then bam! I punished him for it and he was crying then started acting out a bit, I gave him a lecture how biting hurts, we don't do that, we love each other, we should do things that make each other happy blah blah blah, I'm just not sure what's causing it though.  No changes that I can think of off the top of my head, same routine, same amount of time with mom and dad etc. 

 

Any ideas?  I want to work on prevention.  Thanks so much, its really stressing me out!

    This,is really normal and developmental at this age.  Kids are just experimenting with their bodies and the world.  They are just barely starting to understand the idea that they are actually hurting others. My DS bit until he was about 3 (often out of frustration).  

    There are lots of children's books about biting that you can read together that will reiterate that biting hurts.  Honestly, I wouldn't bother giving a lecture or punishment to a 2 or 3 year old.  They are not gonna "get it" that way (at that age they tune you out after you say 2-3 words LOL).  If he bites, use a stern voice and say "No! Biting HURTS!" Then put him down or walk away and remove yourself. Be consistent and it will work.

    Also, we found that we could not do any play biting with DS because he didnt get the difference between playing and hurting (DH would pretend to "eat" his belly, etc).

    It will pass! GL
