We found out we are having a boy. We both like one in particular, Elijah, but want to think about other names just to make sure. DH keeps throwing out Walter. I cannot get on board with it - I can't help but picture an old man. And I don't like Wally or Walt as NNs.
Here are the names we're thinking about. MN is an important family name on his side, Falconer.
Elijah
Harrison
Nathaniel
....and apparently Walter
Is Walter as awful as I think it is, or should I give it another shot? Thoughts on the other names?
Re: Husband and his name suggestions
I like the first three for sure! Not feeling Walter. Not horrible, just not feeling it.
ETA: Harrison Falconer is kind of a mouth full... although it's not like you will be using them together that much.
I think Elijah flows the best with Falconer.
As for Walter...I have a friend who named her son Walter about 3 years ago. At the time, I was not really a fan, but I must say that it did kind of grow on me. They call him Walty. Again, NMS but it suits him.
My favorite is Harrison. It is a little long with Falconer, but long names have never bothered me. I think Harrison Falconer sounds very dignified.
I think all of the other names are fine too. I'm personally a bit tired of Elijah since it's quite common around here.
The only Walter I know is my age. It doesn't HAVE to be an old man.
That being said, if you can't agree on it, it has to go.
I like Elijah. It's just going to be hard to find something to flow with Falconer.
I like your other 3 name choices much better than Walter. Like you, I also think, "old dude" when I hear the name.
The only Walter I know of that's not an old man is the farting dog in the children's book series.
Tell your DH that the kids who grow up with your son will be familiar with Walter as a farting dog, and you can't name your kid after a flatulent canine.
I really, really like Elijah Falconer. 2nd best is Harrison. Nathaniel is great, too!
Just Say NO! to Walter!!

Interesting. I think maybe I should at least consider Walter a bit more, although it still isn't my favorite.
I like Elijah, but someone brought up the very reason I'm hesitant about it - it is quite popular right now. I'd like to not be in the top 20, at least.
My husband's family is all about long names. It doesn't bother me too much because you rarely say them both together. But it is a consideration, for sure.

Yes, the name Walter is as awful as you think it is. I love the rest of your list though!

They are all good names... I'll rank them from most appealing to least, IMO:
Nathaniel
Walter
Harrison
Elijah
I really, really want to like Elijah, but I just can't put my finger on what turns me off of it. That being said, it's still a really strong, masculine name.
Falconer... well, it's pretty bad @$$. I like it. Our passed-down MN in DH's family is Buck. I couldn't do it, and am thankful that BIL and SIL took over the tradition in our generation despite the fact that it is DH's MN.
ETA: I had originally written bad @$$, but TB cut it out, so it looked like I said, "it's pretty bad." I promise that's not what I meant. TB made me look bad.
I briefly dated a really attractive Walter and still can't think of it as anything but an old man name. Also, I don't like the double -er with Falconer, which is kind of an awesome middle name.
I LOVE Nathaniel and really like Elijah. Harrison is okay but I don't like it as much.
Thanks everyone. I'm getting over Elijah. Maybe it reminds me of a hobbit or something, thanks to Elijah Woods. I'm now debating Elias instead of Elijah, but something isn't quite right there either.
I do like the sound of Nathaniel Falconer. I think I may be on board with that one.

Love Nathaniel
Like Harrison
Feel like every other boy is named Eli in some form. So over this name.
That being said, I had a great professor in college who was super cool and still single but old enough that he shouldn't have been. One day I asked him his middle name, it was Alexander, and then I asked if he had ever considered going by that name.
Well, I graduated, but when I went back to visit, he had changed his name to Alex and was engaged. Just saying.
this. I think Walter is a gutsy choice and would be cute on a baby and could be grown into, though its old fashioned
