TTC After a Loss

cycles after D&C

Did anyone else have super weird/heavy cycles after D&C?

This is my 2nd full cycle after my D&C. Last month didn't seem too out of the ordinary, but this month has been tons of bleeding and lots of small clots. I'm just worried that everything isn't normal, but I'm not concerned enough to call my dr yet.

just thought I would check and see if anyone had any insight or a similar experience. TIA Smile

Re: cycles after D&C

  • I've had two or three cycles now, and they have all been heavy. I start out with light spotting, and then very heavy very dark red flow. This is gross, but I do get gooey blackish red clots, and but I always have.

  • My first period lasted for 2 weeks but it wasn't terribly heavy.  Next one was more or less normal, but I did notice some clots.  Hope it tapers off soon!

My first 2 cycles post D&C were awful. I basically lived in sweat pants on the couch. Now 6 months later they have regulated to what they were pre-2nd pg.

I will say that some women though never go back to normal. After my first loss (a natural m/c) my body never went back to it's "normal" cycle. I asked my doc about it and he said that some women never go back to normal. Others go right back. It'll take a few months before you'll know what your body's response is going to be. If you get concerned though, always call the doc. Better to be safe than sorry.

  • It's not that I'm necessarily concerned...it's just more blood than I'm used to. I've had like 3 days of blowouts...I feel like a 16 year old girl again who can't keep track of changing her tampons. haha.

I'm also used to a very quick and easy AF, so this is all new territory for me.

  • I am currently on day 5 of my first post-D&C AF and it has been HORRIBLY HEAVY. Day 3 was the worst by far....lots of clots. I have been wearing a tampon AND a pad just to catch the leakage (and there has been lots of it).

My normal periods are pretty heavy and usually have a clot or two as well, but this has been above and beyond that. I remember it being like this after my first D&C as well, and things went back to normal eventually. I want to say I had two "weird/heavy/crazy" cycles after my first one. Since I am still only on the first one this time, I can't weigh in as to whether it's going to happen again.

All of this. I've only had one but it was different. It lasted a bit longer and wasn't as heavy as my pre mc afs.

This is my third and they have been a lot heavier than I've been used to. The first lasted 5 days, the second 4. Don't know about this one yet. I think it takes awhile for everything to get back to normal.

Sorry, you are going through this. I know how much it sucks to be constantly waiting for your body to get back to normal, and then wondering what "normal" actually is now.

  • I was actually the opposite after my second D&C. My cycles got much lighter and were that way for 2 years. Just in the past couple of months have I noticed they are getting slightly heavier again, more like before the D&C. It's weird how our bodies make a new "normal".

I hope that yours doesn't last too long and it's nothing to be concerned about. Just keep an eye on it.

  • I had strange cycles after a natural miscarriage. The first two were very heavy and painful. I had less energy than usually and sometimes felt lightheaded and sick to my stomach. I discussed with my doctor and he say that we would monitor it but this was totally common, because our bodies get so confused. I have had 1 more normal cycle since then. Normal flow, less pain and the same old salt/chocolate cravings lol. Hope you feel better soon! Also- you have a PM.
  • C&P'd from the TTCALblog.

Whoa, my first period after a D&C/D&E is totally weird and heavy. Is this normal? Most likely, some people have super light periods, some people think their utes are going to fall out and walk away. Like I said, everything is different after a loss.Call your doctor immediately if you experience the following:

*You're bleeding through a super big tampon or pad in an hour or under.
    * You're cramping so bad that you can't sit/stand/function and you get no relief from over the counter meds.
    * You are passing large clots, think the size of a baseball.
    * You feel dizzy and/or faint

  • you're not alone. This is my first cycle after my D&C on 5/7. I thought it started on 5/31 went for a couple days, stopped, spotted, then started again on 5/10 and now is bright red, before it was dark red with clots and thick. So that makes 14 days on and off.
