Natural Birth

Intro!

Been a member a while, but needed to change a few things! But I thought I might write a short intro to say hi.

I'm a FTM, part-time worker, and full-time grad student. So I'm usually very busy and very stressed and would be happy to listen to advice if anyone feels they have something to share!
I'm only 17 wks along, but really determined to do a natural birth. I've been reading all your birth stories and am so impressed and encouraged!

What are your opinions on the different methods? My midwife is a fan of HypnoBabies, so I'm looking into that one. I've read a lot of you talking about Bradley, so also looking into that one. Any testimonials about these or others?

Re: Intro!

  • We did the Bradley method and loved it.  Bradley focuses on spouse/partner support during L&D.  It taught my H how to be a great labor coach and educated him on child birth.  My H learned the emotional signs of labor, what to expect, positions, what interventions are needed and when etc.  The class is typically 12 weeks (there are  shorted/condensed versions offered that are 6-8 weeks in some areas).  It is a big commitment but we like that it made us focus on our upcoming L&D each week.  It was a nice bonding time.  Overall we felt that the class really prepared us for our birth and we ended up having an amazing experience.

  • Hi there!

We did Hypnobirthing both times and had an amazing experience.  Hypnobabies and Hypnobirthing are not the same, but similar.   With Hypnobirthing you have to have the time to devote to practicing and have to really be willing to accept the core message behind the class.  One of the fundamental differences between Bradley and Hypnobirthing is that Bradley teaches that childbirth is 'pain with a purpose', Hypnobirthing says that while intense it does not have to be 'painful'.  In fact they adopt a whole new terminology, contractions are called surges, water breaking is called water releasing, birth canal is called birth path, etc.  Also as pp said Bradley is more 'husband coached'.  Hypnobirthing encourages and has opportunities for husband support, but I found it to be more of a 'go within yourself' approach.  Though that may have just been my experience and what was effective for me.

Both classes are wonderful and effective, it's just more about finding what is the best fit for you :)

  • Thank you both! These are very helpful comments. I'm doing some research on both and having trouble deciding which would be more helpful! My hubby is sweet as can be, but I think he's nervous and uncomfortable about the actual birth. Also, I tend to be a bit introverted, so I'm leaning toward hypnobirthing. But I bought books on both!
