Abnormal Pap smear

Hi, yesterday I had my 11 week check up and I received a call today that my Pap smear was abnormal and they want to put me on an antibiotic. Evidently I have something called gardnarella.  It can be caused by diet and also wearing gym clothing for too long after working out, great! They also said its very common in pregnant woman.  I'm worried about taking the antibiotic. I need to be on it for a week. They said if I don't take the antibiotic the baby could be worse off. I don't feel comfortable with this. Has anyone had to take an antibiotic in the first trimester? The dr office claims the pros outweigh the negatives, but I am just not sure what to do....

Any advice?
Thank you!!

Re: Abnormal Pap smear

  • I didn't have this infection but I had a lot of dental problems when I was pregnant with DS and I ended up getting an infection in my tooth and had to take antibiotics, I don't remember how far along I was though but he was completely healthy.

  • My guess is your ob would not put you on an antibiotic that will harm am unborn baby. You have to weigh your options...is a bacterial infection healthy for your unborn baby? Probably not.
