My tough little monkey is facing some skin issues. Her little micro preemie skin is so fragile that it gets irritated and tears quite easily. Any one else experience any skin issues with their LO?

Re: Skin issues - micro preemie

Our daughter had to have 2 emergency cut downs for central line placement & both times her skin tore really badly. One is in the crease of her arm but it tore all the way around to her elbow & she had stitches. The other was in her groin & she also had stitches there. It's been over 6 weeks now & both sites have healed although it did take quite a while. The one on her arm is a little difficult because there was tension over the scar so now she cannot straighten her arm out fully. PT is working with her to get better range of motion. The one in her groin is healed really well but there is a pretty yucky scar. At this point it is what it is, she needed it to save her life so we'll just take it as one of her many battle wounds!
I hope that helps! It is really common in micro preemies. I did notice that by a month old her skin had really changed & thickened up really well. Now it doesn't look fragile at all so it's amazing how quickly it happens. We got so used to seeing her so shiny & almost see through & then one day she just wasn't!
I saw your post the other day & I kept meaning to reach out to you since we've both had late losses & now are facing this crazy micro preemie journey! I am glad you're on the board & I will send you a pm.

I popped over here to see how you and your amazing little one were doing. I'm sorry to hear that there are any problems at all, but I'm happy to see that it seems to be a common and frequently overcome problem.
I'll be keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers. ((((Hugs))))
P.S. - I'm sending you a PM as well
Welcome to the world Little Girl! Born on her due date! September 8, 2013, 7lb 11.8oz, 19.5" long.
Thanks for the responses. Her skin is looking a little bit better and the tear on her abdomen doesn't look too bad. I'm not too concerned about scars, if she has them we will deal with them, but I am worried about possible infections. They still haven't been able to establish a PICC line so she now has IVs in both hands. They might try for a PICC line again tonight. Poor little thing is going to look like a pin cushion from all the attempts!
mcarter & sopranomama, you have PM!

Im glad things are looking better. It took 3 attempts at a PICC line until they could get one in my DD and it was never in the "optimal" place so she had IVs in ever limb and head. 4 in at one point. Not ideal, but cosmetically those are the least noticeable now. How is she doing otherwise?
