I need a computer geek's help...anyone?

Ok, so my main drive of my comp was almost full tonight and I tried to delete ANYTHING I could find that was a big file...I have cleared out all my documents, videos, pics, and music.  I still only have 8gb free.  It says I have less that 2gb worth of programs.  Where the hell are the other 104 gb?!?!  Any suggestions?

Omg that is amazing! I wish I could VPN to your machine, I would need to poke around. Does your machine require a password to login? I would recommend restarting, but not if you are password protected because that caps mess will lock you out.
Ok I fixed it I think kinda...back to the original issue...im gonna go into a new post

  • OK so it looks liked I have ALOT of processes running...mostly chrome seems to be the big one. What do I do?  The changing of font has something to do with hitting shift and space bar at the same time

  • Do you have a tech-savvy friend who could come over and help you with it? It would be hard to guess without seeing it, but I'd start with a good virus scan and registry cleaner, then go from there.

Nope...just me and usually I am pretty good at cleaning stuff up. I use AVG for my viruses and it runs daily...I did a disk cleanup it only freed up around 400kb.

No you should be fine but the problem will come back. What CPU percentage is it using? Also do you have any chrome plug ins?

There are 7  ranging 0-3% I have 99 processes running and 51% physical memory.  No chrome plug ins

Edit: 7 Chrome processes open sorry...CPU running 0-3%

ok chrome isn't the problem. Blah! I need more info because there are a couple of things that could be taking space

I am totally at a loss it has been like this a long time.  I have a data drive on it and that's where I put my photos, videos, music.  I just try to delete a files or programs once in a while to keep a couple of gb free.

  • You guys are amazing. It's like you're speaking another language, a magical one. I'm fascinated! I usually turn the damn thing off and back out of the room slowly. Eat a pint of ice cream and wait for husband to get home and fix his baby. She only effs up when he is gone because she hates me. I think she is jealous of me.
  • imageNRyan55:
bkeane, could I get a screen shot of your hard drive usage? The processes as well as the screen showing available disk space?
sure, will be in a little while though. Gotta do the shower/breakfast thing first.

  • If it's cleanup you're interested in but the disk cleanup didn't work for you (as it would seem) then DH found this nifty freeware https://windirstat.info/ "WinDirStat" that can tell you what files are taking up the most space and how much. It scans all the files in your HDD instead of just the temporary "won't kill your computer if you delete this junk" sorts of files like your cookies.

"WinDirStat is a disk usage statistics viewer and cleanup tool for various versions of Microsoft Windows."

DH used it on my desktop last night and it's pretty to look at, which is a bonus - he's got like 8 years of IT under his belt and we take apart computers together so I trust it if he's installing crap on my machine.

Not much you can do if it's OS with updates besides get a bigger hard drive.

100GB of OS? That seems crazy. I will get on my laptop in like 15 mins and do the screenshots.

OH. I just had a brain... moment... thing... LIGHTBULB!

Do you have a lot of restore points saved from all the updates? Maybe that's taking up a bunch of space - especially if you have it set to automatically create restore points instead of manually.

  • 100GB of OS and Updates.  Yes.  It's possible.  Ridiculous, but possible.
