Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Non-GMO, glueten free, organic.....etc

Do you buy non-gmo, GF, organic, multi-grains etc? If so, what are some brands you favor over others?

I've been making baby/toddler-friendly yummies at home, but I wonder about packaged goods. Such as bread, hummus, pasta etc.

I've been making our own bread, dried fruits and such, but with summer travels and hot temp. I'm trying to drop baking and dehydrating fruits.

Why can't all packages are like Angie's sweet & salty popcorns from costco...heehee  Munch munch.

  • I buy a ton of organic (which is non-GMO) and have recently started going gluten free.  For the most part, it's best to avoid packaged foods as much as possible.  However, that's not realistic.  Some of the brands I like are Annie's, Stonyfield, Organic Valley, Eden Organic (BPA free cans), Mary's Crackers (GF), KIND, Larabar, Ella's kitchen (and other organic baby food pouches).  I just make sure to read the ingredients of every item I buy.  I try to avoid added sugars (including fruit juice) and non-organic corn or soy.

  • Just an FYI that organic does NOT mean non-GMO. Unless it specifies "100% organic," there are very possibly (and even likely with any packaged food) GMOs present.

I am by no means an expert on this subject, but I think some of the brands you listed are  GMO - Larabar being one of them.

  • I'm gf and so is LO.  I buy Udi's bread products when I'm not up for making (seems like often right now!).  I do make sure to buy the whole grain loaf, not the white bread.  Sabra hummus is awesome and super tasty.  I do a lot of fresh fruits, so that's easy.  Pasta I buy the Ancient Harvest quinoa pasta, it's got a ton of protein it in!  The only thing to be careful of there is that it doesn't keep well, so make it the same day LO will be eating it.

If you're interested in baking the bread without having your oven on, look into bread machines.  Mine's great and has a gf setting.  I either make up a flour mix or just buy a boxed one and in 3 hours, fresh bread with none of the hard work.  I have a Cuisinart that looks like a big silver brick.

  • If you're going glUten free, just get rid of gluten foodstuffs.  There is no need to substitute it with alternatives.  What a waste of money.

It's fruits, vegetables, nuts, eggs and meats in many forms at our house.

this is mostly what we do except we do dairy and gluten free cereal/crackers/pasta. The latter is very easy to find at an affordable price. We shop at trader joes.

The Larabars that I have in my pantry specifically say "non-GMO" on the package.  They are the apple pie flavor...maybe there are other flavors that use GMOs?  I think the bottom line is- avoid packaged foods as much as possible but when you can't, read the labels and make the best choice.

My doctor said the same thing today, so I'm a bit confused.  From the USDA website, "The use of genetic engineering, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs), is prohibited in organic products."   Here is the link:  https://blogs.usda.gov/2013/05/17/organic-101-can-gmos-be-used-in-organic-products/

  • Not all fruits are safe either. # stickers on fruits will indicate. See below link for more info.
