Is this weird for a RE practice?

So my RE wants to check my hcg levels 4 times, as standard practice. Also do a 6 8 wk ultrasound. I'm out of town at 6 weeks so they tell me to get it done while out of town, with another MD.

All of this seems excessive to me. Like, if something is wrong with fetus, it's not going to be solved with an ultrasound. And can i just go on vakay pls without a vag u/s? Most women don't get this kind of care, right?

What is your experience? Has anyone declined these tests? Am I going to get blacklisted?!

Re: Is this weird for a RE practice?

  • I understand they are ruling out ectopic etc, but the testing isn't going to change the risk...

Just needed to vent, thx. So tired of these appointments and tests! Please stay out of my vagina...!

  • I had three betas or maybe four, I honestly can't remember.  I did have u/s at 5wk, 6wk, and 8wks.  However, if I had declined any of those it would have been fine and if I was going out of town I don't think my RE would have suggested me doing it anywhere else.  I would think you can opt out and follow up with your OB around the 8wk mark.

  • I had 3 hcg tests and two ultrasounds before 9 weeks. I think that the second one was because I traveled to London between the 6w5 day one and the 8 week 3 day one. I think our RE just wanted to confirm that all was still well.

  • I am not pregnant yet, but I have been seeing an RE for the last few months.  We were doing tests, blood work ect and we finally had a consultation to go over everything.  I looked at the nurse and said "what, i don't have to get naked today?"  we both laughed.

Congratulations!  I hope all goes well and they give your  vagina a break :-)

  • Is it standard, yes probably. Can you elect not to have it done, absolutely.

My dp is very anti-invasive etc. She felt it was a little excessive. She had the 6 week ultrasound to confirm the baby was where he was suppose to be etc and she had the first 2 initial beta's done to insure her levels were rising as they should. She decided against the extra beta's checks and 8 week ultrasound.

She works in the medical field and felt it was unnecessary. She is also a firm believer in NOT doing something "just because" the Dr suggests it.

  • I unsuccessfuly worked with an RE--but that was all part of the standard protocal for pregancy.

  • Thanks for the responses, guys. I work in the medical field too (I'm a nurse) and usually have no trouble advocating for myself. My fear is a mix of pregnant vulnerability and the culture of health care on the east coast (west coast is far more patient-focused). However, I told them to shove it and declined the 3rd beta and 6 week ultrasound. Felt good to do it, too. Thanks again.
