1st Ultrasound & it doesn't look good ****New Update***

We went in for our first ultrasound today and they couldn't find a baby, only the empty sac.  Here are the facts

Last period was April 17

According to CBE fertility monitor I ovulated April 28th

Positive pregnancy test May 9th (period was due the 14th)

Started hcg/progesterone draws on May 13

First reading hcg 82  progesterone 24.4

Second reading one week later hcg 1238 progesterone 16.6

Third reading one week & 1 day later 6,685 progesteron 10.6

They started me on baby aspirin and progesterone.

I have two very large fibroid tumors that are causing the gestastional sack to be a little misshaped.  The ultrasound tech said they were casting a shadow and making it difficult to see.  Then when she got a good view she said she didn't see a baby.  She called the doctor in and did u/s again.  The doctor said we may be dealing with miscalculation I asked how off we could be since I know when I ovulated.  He said it could depend on actual implantation and such.  According to my calculations I should be 6 wks and 4 days.  The gestational sac was measuring 5 wks and 5 days.  He said to continue all meds as though it is a viable pregnancy and we will have just wait and see.  I go back Monday for another blood draw and he said we will go from there.

Has anyone experienced anything like this?  What was the outcome? Any possible chance for a viable pregnancy? I am trying to be realisitic and not get my hopes up. A friend told me at the very least to make sure they do another u/s next week before any procedures like a D&C are performed just in case. Feeling very numb right now.

I've been through this, unfortunately in my case it was a blighted ovum and never developed. Sometimes it is just a miscalculation though and late to develop so don't give up hope yet. I will be hoping for the best for you! Hugs!!

I went through this back in January.  After my first u/s the doctor basically told me he could not find a fetal pole and I should pack it up, go home and wait to miscarry.  He never even had a blood draw done.  He told me to come back in three weeks if I still hadn't passed the pregnancy.

I went home, cried for three days and called another doctor for a second opinion.  5 days later my new doctor found my baby and a heartbeat!  Tomorrow I will be 28 weeks!  I'm not sure how often this happens, but don't lose hope yet.  I send you thoughts and prayers because I know exactly how you are feeling right now.  Try to hang in, and see if you can go back for another u/s soon.  It's amazing what can happen in just a few days.

Thank you so much for giving me some hope.  If you don't mind me asking, how far along were you at the time of the first u/s?  I have been searching the net and apparently this is not uncommon.  I just have to wait it out and see what my labs do and what the next u/s tells us.  At this point my doctor did not make the blighted ovum diagnoses.  He just said we need further testing after some time has passed.  I will get a new blood draw on Monday with u/s probably later in the week.

I went through this with my first pregnancy and they waited until I was eight weeks pregnant before my doctor told me it was a missed miscarriage.  We waited before we were certain it was not viable and then I had a D&C.  Our baby never developed past six weeks but if the gestational sac is only 5 weeks they won't really see anything until 6 or 7 weeks.  With my second pregnancy my doctor did not check the ultrasound until I was around 7 weeks along and we found my second pregnancy was going to be viable. With this current pregnancy we waited until I was eight weeks and saw the heartbeat.  I will say both waits were nerve-racking since I had been through a miscarriage with my first pregnancy and was very apprehensive. I was also on progesterone injections for my second pregnancy and this current pregnancy I know those injections saved both pregnancies.  My HCG numbers were always good but my progesterone numbers were always low. Sending lots of thoughts and prayers your way!

I got my labs back today and my hcg is 14,725 and my progesterone is 25.  I asked the nurse if we should be preparing ourselves for the pregnancy to end and she said no.  She said my hcg level is respectable and the progesterone is great.  So to make sure I was clear on what she was saying I said we can have hope, but guarded hope? To which she replied absolutely.  I mentioned that I know my doctor is concerned about a blighted ovum to which she said yes there is some concern but she then proceeded to tell me that due to the fibroids I have and their size that she is not surprised by the ultrasound.  She said it is so early and my fibroids are so large that she would not have expected to see much. (She also told me my appointment for ultrasound was supposed to be next Friday, not this past one)  I remember the ultrasound tech and the first thing she said was "your fibroids are so large they are casting shadows and it is tough to see!"    So for now we play the waiting game.  I go back Monday for more labs and if that is good I go for an ultrasound on June 13th.  Please keep your fingers crossed and if you are prayer inclined, say one for us.

Thank you.  Happy vibes, thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated :)  I had a bit of panic yesterday as I started bleeding.  It wasn't much and it only lasted an hour but it sure made my heart sink when it started.  I talked to my nurse and she thinks it was probably cervical irritation.  I didn't have any cramps and no more bleeding so fingers crossed.  Thursday just can't get here fast enough!

I got my lab results today. Last week they were 14,725 this week they are 16,257. Instead of doubling every 48-72 hours, they only increased by 1,532. The nurse told me to come in Thursday for the ultra sound but she has never seen a pregnancy with such a low rate of increase be a viable one. Waiting until Thursday to get some closure with the u/s.
