Hi ladies! You opinion is greatly appreciated. We love the name Sophia. Then realized it was the number one baby name! Is it a bad idea to name your child such a popular name?
I think it is too popular. #1 is going to be pretty popular everywhere you go.
I would say keep looking, but if you dont find a name that you love just as much, then go with it. Dont choose another name that you dont love as much just because of the popularity thing. (hope that makes sense lol)
You have to decide if popularity is a deal breaker for you and your SO. Sophia IS a pretty name, but there are so so so many beautiful names for a little girl.
If I were giving advice to a friend, I would say to do a lot of research-- make a list of other names that you find just as appealing and go thru them with your H. If you keep coming back to Sophia-- then so be it. There are worse things than having a crazily popular name.

Yes.. It's a very pretty name but it's so popular that there will probably always be another Sophia in her class or in her age group where ever you go. I would keep looking if I were you. There's so many girl names out there! My sister liked the name Sophia but found the name Celia and named my niece that. It's different, but still pretty.. Just keep looking.. You'll be surprised what you may find :
As someone who wouldnt touch anything in the top 100 for either of my girls, I would say yes definitely, but that's me, not you.
I will say though as one of the five Samantha's in my grade I actually didn't mind it as a kid, I felt some sort of comradely with the other Sams. I was talking to another Samantha who I work with about this during our naming process and she actually felt the same way, like part of a special club
Growing up with one of the top names of the 80s (consistently #1 and #2) and having about seven other girls in my class with that name (and I had a small class!) you could not pay me to entertain even the notion of Sophia or Isabella. My name had a different spelling, but not a different pronunciation, so friends called me by my last name (maiden name) to differentiate me from the others. They still call me that, when I see them. I told DH that if we ever had a girl, we would have to stay out of the top 100. Luckily the name we fell in love with is in the 300s.

I think popular is relative. I only know 1 Sophia; however there were 3 Audrey's (my LO's name) in a play group of about 10 last week. Yes, Sophia is #1 but its nowhere near the "Jennifer" that was the 80s if that makes sense.

DD is Sophia. I have yet to meet another Sophia in her daycare, when we go to the park, or at any of the birthday parties we have gone to. I do know it's very popular but I haven't seen any in my area as of yet. The only other one I know is a guy I went to HS with named his daughter Sofia who is about 2 weeks older than my DD, but we live about 3 hours away from eachother and I never see him.

I'm an Ashley of the 80's/90's and there were other Ashley's in my class, but it never bothered me. I never even gave it a second thought. I've never understood why people get worked up about choosing a name that no one else has - I would rather choose a name that I truly love, but to each his own. Now that I have my own Sophia, we have yet to meet a single other Sophia...we do know one Sophie. I know they are out there somewhere, but we have yet to meet any other Sophia's in our area between dance, gymnastics, swim and the playground
For me it is. I had 3 girl names picked out, 2 of which are quite popular. I fell in love with name #3 and I think its partially due to it not being super popular. I have a more unique name and DHs isn't heard all that often, so I like the idea of something you don't hear a lot.

This. Sophia was on our short list (with Elizabeth, Mary and another family name). DH loved it, when I told him how popular it was he said, okay then name any you know. I only know of one, a girl at my work in her mid twenties who spells it Sofia. We ended up having another boy, so it didn't matter. But we thought it was a girl, so he always referred to the baby as Sophia! Love the name and if you do too, then use it. Might be popular now, but its a classic, beautiful name that ages well. Trendy, made up names are everywhere and sound ridiculous, Sophia doesn't. GL
My DD is Sophia and goes by Sophie. There is another Sophia in her preschool, but she only goes by Sophia. We loved the name and we used it. So far, popularity hasn't really been an issue.
My son's name is very popular too, but it's NBD to me. We loved the name and it seemed right for him.
I'm a Jennifer from the 80s. I always had at least one other Jennifer in my class. Even now in my office, we have 3! But it's never bothered me.
Sophia is popular for a reason, it's beautiful and classic. The popular names now are not used as much as a percent of total birth as back in the 80's. According to the social security website, back in 1980 (my year of birth) Jennifer was the number one girls name and accounted for %3.2 of girls born that year, while in 2012, Sophia was the number one name and only accounted for %1.1 of births. So it's a much smaller percentage, I really don't think she will be one of five in her class, like Jennifer back in the day.
If you love it, I say use it. FWIW I only know one Sophia, she's in DD's preschool class.
It is very popular according to stats that I find on the internet, but personally I don't even know one person or child named Sophia.
My daughters name is Isabella, and I've had that name picked out since I was about 12, I wasn't going to give up a name I loved so much and for so long because it suddenly became popular.
i'm expecting my second child and if it's a girl she will be Sophia! I love the name and I like the way it sounds with DD's name, I really don't care how popular it is.
They are my children, and I'll make sure they feel special and know how and with how much love I choose their names

Is it too popular for whom?
For me, personally-- yes.

I think it is beautiful, but if you don't want your child to be one of possibly ten in her class, then you might want to reconsider.
I will say though as one of the five Samantha's in my grade I actually didn't mind it as a kid, I felt some sort of comradely with the other Sams. I was talking to another Samantha who I work with about this during our naming process and she actually felt the same way, like part of a special club

Despite the fact that it's #1, I don't know a single one. There's never been one in my daughters class, either.
Popularity is so individual. My daughters name is always rather high on the list (Alexis) and it didn't matter to us at all. I love it, regardless.
My daughters name is Isabella, and I've had that name picked out since I was about 12, I wasn't going to give up a name I loved so much and for so long because it suddenly became popular.
