Bassinet or Pack n Play

Hey everyone!

I have been going back and forth mainly with myself for months now. My baby is due in September. I am planning on having my baby sleep in my room with me for the first few months. I have heard the pack n play is only good for short naps through the day because the mattress pad isn't form enough. I want something practical until she goes into her crib. Please give suggestions and links to what I should consider buying. Thanks for your support! Also should the baby take naps in her crib or whatever I put in my room until she goes into her crib fulltime.

Re: Bassinet or Pack n Play

  • We used the pack n play in our room for 6 months with no issues. The mattress was definitely firm enough.

  • Thank you! Can you send me a link of which one you used? Did you use the bassinet part?
  • Most bassinets and PnP have basically the same type/thick mattress, so don't let that change your mind.

If your room is small, then you may want a bassinet for those first 3 months until baby grows out of it. But most PnPs have the optional bassinet and I know people have used those too next to their beds. PnP can also be used for like a year as a safe play area for baby.

We used our bassinet next to our bed until just over 3 months when she started rolling in her sleep then we transitioned her to crib.

My DD really only napped in arms, swing or RnP until 3 months when I started having her take short naps in her crib to start the transition.

  • We plan on having our son sleep in a Pack n Play in our room for the first few months. Most come with a bassinet feature that you can use up until 15 pounds. They also make special mattresses for Pack n Plays if you want extra support for when they outgrow the bassinet feature (Walmart.com ~$30-$40).  Once baby outgrows a regular bassinet you wouldn't have another option with it and it would just sit in storage.

  • We skipped getting a bassinet because I knew WAY too many kids that outgrow it (length wise) after 2mo. I felt it was a waste of money when we would need a PnP for traveling anyway. We got a basic PnP with the bassinet on top and she slept in that for awhile in our room.

  • You should definitely look into the Rock n' Play. I have heard soooo many good things about these from new mom's and online reviews that I registered for one and will be using it instead of a bassinet. They are small enough and collapsable so that you can carry them around the house - like in the kitchen if you're cooking, or in the bathroom when you're showering. It puts the baby on a slight incline which has it's pros and cons, but you should definitely read the reviews on these things!
  • My vote is for PnP.  Both my kids slept in a PnP in our room for the first 9 months and we will be doing the same with this baby.  They slept in the bassinet part and when they outgrew that, they slept in the bottom.  I never had any issues.  PnP are also great as a play pen, when visiting friends/family, or going on vacation.

They are just much more versatile than a bassinet.

  • Another suggestion for a rock n play. Dd had bad reflux. She didn't sleep well in the bassinet at all. We have a pack n play but it has only been used when my niece visited. It is big and awkward. I wish we had not gotten a pnp.

  • I don't think I saw anyone mention this but there are travel pack n plays too.  They're practically bassinet sized, but still have the functionality of a pack n play.  You can use one like a bassinet early on, then have a smaller portable playard later.

Graco makes some.  (They're carried at BRU and Target)

  • We are using the Rock and Play for a bassinet, it is study but lightweight and folds down really easily. I will be using the pack and play downstairs and the Rock and Play in the bedroom.
