SO: Scare, how many of you are CPR certified?

SO: Scare, how many of you are CPR certified?

Leah's post below got me thinking about CPR certification. I've been certified so my times I could do it in my sleep. It is a requirement for the gym where I teach a few fitness classes. I was a lifeguard as a teen and took CPR each year.

Dh is not and has never been CPR certified. It is something that he said he wanted to do when we got pregnant, but like many things (crib included) that just hasn't happened. I'm going to bring it up again and try to find a place where he can take the class.

Are you CPR certified? Is your DH? If not, is it something you would consider?

Re: SO: Scare, how many of you are CPR certified?

  • Both of us are. It was a requirement before taking LO home from the NICU. Im so glad I did. Its very valuable. We have a video and fake doll that was given to us to practice at home too.

I'm not anymore but used to be. My mom ran a home daycare two separate times and I got certified with her, I also kept it up when I babysat in high school/college.

DH is due to his job and I didn't even know it until recently. He's an AC tech and is certified for CPR as well as infant CPR.

  • I worked in a hospital, so we all had to be BLS certified. DH was certified ages ago, but isn't right now. Our pedi actually asks about CPR at every appt and gives us info on local classes so DH can investigate. He hasn't done it yet, but I know he'd like to.

We both are. I am certified in BLS as an RN and DH is certified in CPR because he works in juvenile corrections.

DH has never had to use it. I have done CPR several times at work. It terrifies me to think of ever doing CPR on a child, let alone my own baby. It's so good to know those skills for everyday life. You never know when they will come in handy!

  • I am (I'm actually a licensed EMT). DH is not. I highly recommend a good CPR and first aid class for ALL parents. If you're not sure which one to pick try looking for one that meets the requirements for foster parents because they usually cover the most common kid related issues.

The thing about CPR is that it really is a skill. You can't just memorize it and do it 3 years later. Same with the Heimlich maneuver. It can take a surprisingly long time for an ambulance to show up after you initially dial 911. Things can deteriorate so quickly with kids, it's terrifying.

  • Yes, the post was indeed scary one!  I am not certified but I took a CPR class while I was pregnant.  I will need to read the material again to remember the steps.  Thanx for posting this!

This got me re-thinking things.  My husband and I were both lifeguards for YEARS (high school through college) so I just figured because we both took the recert class every year so many years in a row we were good to go, but you know what?  We haven't taken a class in like 7 years if not more!  I think it's time for a refresher.  Yikes.  It doesn't seem like it has been that long.

We are both certified. I work in a hospital and MH is a Red Cross first responder. I agree it is a skill that needs to be practiced and visited often. When you need to do CPR it needs to be engrained enough that your body does it without your brain having to think as you will likely be in a panic state and not thinking too clearly.

We both are for work. I brought home a borrowed teaching video and mannequin when I was about 28 weeks though for DH to review infant CPR since he works with older kids.
