Adoption

Too excited... need to be prepared for my long wait...

I've been in the books for domestic adoption for a total of about three days and all I want to do is look at car seats and things for the nursery!  I guess excitement is good, but I've been told my wait could be up to 18 months.  My dh and I have decided we won't set up a nursery until after placement.  We will buy a car seat travel system and probably a pack and play or a travel crib before hand, but we thought we should wait till after Christmas.

Did anyone else go through this phase and will my shopping bug fizzle out as the wait continues?  I'm afraid I'm going to make myself crazy.

Re: Too excited... need to be prepared for my long wait...

  • Yes!  although I could calm myself a little with buying little things.  When I saw basic neutral onsies on sale I would let myself get those.  And since I know we are going to do cloth diapers I have been buying them when i see them on sale/ clearance.  My thought is that if I see something I want/ we need I will buy it when it goes on sale because I will need it in time and I have room to store it.  Besides it spreads out the costs a bit too.

My shopping comes and goes.  But I really do try to limit myself to sales because then I don't feel guilty because I am saving money on items we will need.  We have all of our furniture, but that is because we were able in inherit hand-me-downs so we could take advantage of that.  It is an interesting balance though because I know I want to leave things to buy for when we are matched and want to get gender specific things then too!

  • :)  Yes, the excitement will fizzle down.  It's good that you are excited but it could be a long wait so try not to get too excited just yet.  :)

  • I'm a complete "Type A" and have everything ready to go.  We started shopping, and continue to pick things up as we see them on sale.  Every once in a while Babies R Us comes out with a 20% off coupon, so we've used those to buy a glider, stroller, car seat, etc.  I think I'd be more stressed if there was a lot left to do if we get a fast placement.  Plus, it makes me happy and feels a little more "real."

I have not bought diapers or formula . . . just setting aside $10-20 per week.

    Have fun!  ;-)

  • DH and I can't even apply for our program for 2 more years, but I still research and browse baby things online. I won't let myself buy anything yet, bc, well it will be at least 2.5 years before we even have the possibility of a lil one! But I am excited, and I can imagine how excited you are since you are SO close to getting a baby!!!!!!

  • We are treating our 'wait' as if we are expecting. I know this is a personal decision for everyone and there is no right answer. After reading several books, looking at what others have done, and our situation. We have decided to decorate the nursery now - gender neutral and add gender specific decor later. Our home study is expected to take 4-6 weeks which we plan to begin in January with our agency. Our wait once that is complete is anywhere from 1 day to 9 months (according to our agency0 because are adopting a domestic black or bi-racial infant and we are not constrained financially. Also, I'm a planning queen and would feel added stress if we were to get 'the call' and not have anything ready. I can't imagine doing it with an infant as a first time parent lol

I think you just have to do what makes you feel happy and comfortable, and acknowledge that if an adoption would fail how you would feel having the nursery ready.

Good luck and enjoy your paper pregnancy - no matter the wait!
