Hi Ladies,
I was wondering who is taking medicine for their colitis while pregnant. I was doing fine before I got pregnant, and then halfway through my first trimester I started having symptoms. I took myself off my meds once I found out that I was pregnant but had to get back on them to help me feel better. I think part of the problem was that I was having and still am having MAJOR food aversions. I hated the idea of taking meds while pregnant let alone in my first trimester. But I had no choice. My normal "healthy" diet is non-existent.
I tolerate grains, bread, cheese, crackers, and can't stand meat! I have completely changed my diet and am frustrated as I am not feeling much better. (When I do grains, I try to keep it whole grains or quinoa and brown rice... but that's when I am feeling ok. The goldfish in the morning help me not get sick)
Does anyone have suggestions on diet as well as medicine? My doctor said stay on the meds. I hate it! I am not absorbing my prenatal vitamins very well.
I am now 15 weeks, and am nervous about what to expect for the rest of the pregnancy and after. I would love some help, as the doctors are very bland and give me the same "you should be fine". I take 4 pills of Lialda daily.
Thank you so much!
Re: Ulcerative Colitis while Pregnant
I have UC and I also take 4 pills of Lialda a day. I was extremely sick in the beginning of my pregnancy to the point where I was on a zofran pump for 2 1/2 months. Zofran is very constipating so I had the opposite problem for a while but then when I went off the pump, I immediately started to flare which is why my doctor had me continue to take my pills as a preventative thinking that may happen. I have also had to take rowasa enemas every night since probably about week 18 as well. Both my ob and my GI doctor are absolutely fine with me taking these medications. I didn't like the idea at first but if you flare, that is worse because then the baby isn't getting any nutrients. I am 31 weeks now and have had no issues (other than being sick) thus far. I am not going to stop my medications as a preventative measure. I don't want to have a horrible flare after I give birth either and not be able to really enjoy my time as a new mom. But to each her own and you should do whatever you feel most comfortable with.
Also, as an fyi, I was told by my ob that having an autoimmune disorder like UC can affect the placenta in the end of the pregnancy. So, at 36 weeks when I start going for my weekly doctor visits, I will also have to get non-stress tests and sonograms done every single week. Be sure your OB knows you have UC and make sure he/she monitors you closely when you get further along.
Sorry for the long post but I completely understand how you feel!! Good luck with everything and try not to worry too much, I'm sure everything will be fine no matter what you choose to do!! :-)
