  • Sonia compliments Marina well. It's not really my style but nothing wrong with it. I also like Elizabeth.

I love Sonia.  I prefer this spelling.

I think it's classy, will grow up well, and not often used.  Your other choices are good, but Sonia is better.

    These are my exact thoughts.

Love Sonia and think it compliments your DDs name well. I have a good friend named Sonja, so I am biased to this spelling, but don't mind the i either.  Not a fan of the y spelling.

I agree, great choice and very refreshing

  • Thanks everyone so far! I did a little research and found out the Sonia spelling is the slavic version and my last name is very slavic (as is DH's heritage). I prefer the Sohn-ya pronunciation.

Interesting.  My friend is Slovenian and the from what I can find the j spelling is the Slavic spelling.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonia_(name)

"Slavic countries spell the name with the letter "j": Sonja, while many English speaking countries spell it with "i" or "y": Sonia or Sonya. These are only variations on the same name."

  • My favorite on your list is Amelia.  It sounds more unique, but not weird, than the other names.  :)

What's the best resource? I looked at babynames.com. It said Sonia is slavic and Sonja is Scandinavian. I'll keep researching!

Not sure. Now I am finding mixed info.  All I know for sure is my friend is first generation in the US and her name is spelled Sonja.

  • Sorry, quote fail on this one!

Thanks! I checked several sources and I think the all conflicted!  It must be such an international name that its gotten confused. We had a similar issue finding information on Marina.

  • I love Sonia! That was my meema's name. She spelled hers Sonja. If we were having a girl, Sonja would definitely be in the running for middle name.

  • Sonia spelled this way.  I think the pronunciation is a personal preference and they're both nice.  Please, please use this great name!

  • It's cute, but people may not pronounce it like you want them to.  I've heard it pronounced both ways.

But that's no reason to not use it - I love Ariel and Ariana and I think people may pronounce those differently too ("R" sound vs. "Air" sound) - still wouldn't sway me from using!

  • I really like Sonia, spelled that way. And it goes great with sister Marina.

  • Thanks everyone!  DH is not so on board. I thought he was yesterday, but I think he has some negative connotations with it. We'll see. I still love it!  Anna is our front runner even though I think its a little boring.
