  • Thanks it does help! This has been going on for a while and I just get nervous because a co worker once told me that such food aversions can be a sign of autism and the other day when I mentioned he hates baths, she suggested I get him checked out. My doctor thinks he is just fine at this present time

My brother would only eat those exact same things, and he's 35 now, still eating the same things, mostly. He always has been and always will be a picky eater. He's not overweight or anything because he always ran around a lot and burned off the carbs/calories.

I'm sharing this to let you know it's not the end of the world. :-)

He sounds like a typical toddler, if your doctor isn't worried about Autism I wouldn't worry either.  I know tons of perfectly normal toddlers who are picky eaters and don't like baths!

I agree with PP... try to look at the week as a whole, rather than just one day, both in terms of quality and quantity consumed.

My rule of thumb is for each meal to make sure at least one thing on her plate is something she likes... so if I'm trying a new recipe at dinner, I will make sure she has a side of something she has had before and likes.  If she doesn't eat her dinner, oh well.  I don't offer her anything else, and I don't make a big deal out of it.  It can be hard to watch your kid not eat an entire meal, but he isn't going to starve himself.

In addition to what others have said, my LO eats raw veggies way better than cooked ones. I still offer cooked ones, but offer some raw ones too, either with the meal or at a snack time. My LO also use to throw unwanted food to the dogs, even when they weren't there. We got past that [not quite 100 percent, but it is a world better] by telling him to put unwanted food in a designated spot. He has to be reminded at times, but he is pretty good about it. Even if we don't point out a particular spot, he now chooses a spot on his own. On his booster seat tray, he puts it in the section where a cup would go. If I emptied a little tupperware container of veggies onto a plate, he'll put the rejects back in the tupperware. He usually prefers the reject spot be separate from the rest of his food [a divided plate, a different dish, etc.], but sometimes he will just put it to the side of his regular plate. This has helped a ton with the dog feeding.

That's a really good idea.  How old was he when you were able to teach him that?

  • LO is a good eater. Since we started table food she has always gotten whatever I have. I don't prepare or cut it in a special way, unless it is steak of bone-in chicken. She gets new things served to her all the time and doesn't wait for me to try it before she'll eat it. I think eating is a game plus they imitate their care givers. The only exceptions to that are if we go out to eat, i know it will be a while for our food to arrive so i will order her a kids meal when we sit down and order drinks.
  • My son is 13 months and i have a very hard time getting him to eat veggies. He loves fruit though. But he is a huge snack food kind of boy. Picky eater just like i was and still am a bit. I am hoping it will go away. Good luck :)
  • I'm always so confused by people who say their kid is such a bad eater, then list what the kid DOES eat - and the list includes a bunch of crap.  Why offer your child chicken nuggets, pizza, etc if they haven't mastered eating HEALTHY foods.

But, this is coming from a mom whose kid is 3, eats anything anyone puts in front of him, but still isn't allowed chicken nuggets, hot dogs, etc.  People always say, "Oh you have such good eaters, how do you do it?!?"  I didn't give them any "fun" food until they accepted the healthy stuff.  With my second son that was more of a struggle that the first, but it paid off.
