Re: (Untitled)

  • First off, congrats on the upcoming birth of your baby! I wish you both a safe delivery. :)

I had a version performed at 36 weeks, 1 day since my son was frank breech and I was in early labor. While it was unsuccessful and ultimately I needed a csection, I am happy that I agreed to trying the version. I felt like the risks of a version were lower than that of a csection, and even though it was uncomfortable (I declined the pain meds and couldn't be given the steroid used to relax my uterus due to a maternal medical condition) I would do it again if need be.

For me, trying the version before surgery brought me some peace of mind and I was able to accept the risks of a csection a lot easier since I had explored all other avenues. If I didn't try, I know I would've had a lot more anxiety.

    I hope this helps you!

  • DD was breech.  DS had been born vaginally, so my OB felt I was a very good candidate for a version.  I was all for it; overall it reduces your chance of a c-section to about 50/50 and is very safe.

My OB does them at 39 weeks and, for a successful version, immediately breaks the water and induces labor.  She feels the chances of baby turning back are too high to be worthwhile earlier.  An epidural was strongly recommended because it increases the chance of a successful version.

I had an adverse reaction to the epidural (DS was born med-free, so this was my first epi).  My blood pressure dropped immediately, DD's heartrate dropped, and she was too distressed to tolerate attempting a version, so I ended up being rushed to the OR for a section.  A major bummer, but DD was fine and my recovery was quite easy.

DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.

My DD was transverse and I agreed to the version at 36 weeks, she did go head down then she flipped back up and went breech.  Stubborn kid!  She was born via C-section 5 days later.  I don't regret having the version done, I wanted to try to have a vaginal birth.  It gave me tme to mentally prepare for c-section.  Good luck to you!!!
  • Thanks. I'm just worried about things going wrong and having to deliver early. The don't do epidurals for versions where I'm going, so hopefully that removes one possible complication. It is nice to have this time to mentally prepare myself and DH for a csection and at least I'll feel like I tried even if it doesn't work.

  • My LO was frank breech at 40 weeks. We tried the version but it was unsuccessful. The nurse said there were 3 other versions attempted on the floor that day and mine was the only one that didn't work. Mine didn't work because I carried very small. My belly looked like a small basketball at 40 weeks. She just didn't have room in there. It was nice because I didn't have any stretch marks after delivery. But that was the only upside. That tiny belly made the last 2 months very painful.

If you try it definitely prepare yourself. It was difficult and painful in my case. It was not the worst pain of my life but it was painful. It is nearly impossible to relax your ab muscles while they are pushing and pulling. I didn't have any meds. I would definitely try it again though.

  • This question gets posted at least once a month I think... Versions are just fine and yes you're doing the right thing giving it a try. Don't be scared. And the c/s will be fine too. I speak from eperience as I had both...
  • I didn't have the version, but I did try chiropractic and acupuncture.  Both of which had numerous benefits, but ultimately LO was not interested in rearranging himself.  My c-section was fine and I would do it the same way again.  Good luck!

  • I had the version and although it was unsuccessful, I'm glad I tried because I really wanted to have an unmedicated vaginal birth. There's really nothing "medical" about it at all, just two people tugging and shoving at your midsection. Don't sweat it, best of luck.
