Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Re: (Untitled)

  • he's not ready, try again in a few weeks.  Most pedi's are saying to start solids closer to 6 mos anyway. And you don't have to start with cereal if he doesn't like it.

Ditto. We don't plan on starting solids until 6 months, which is what we did with DS1.

    Yes

You definitely don't have to start with cereal. And while you can start as early as 4 months, it's pretty rare for a child to actually be ready at 4 months. Look for loss of tongue thrust, gaining interest in food, ability to sit with little or no assistance and ability to take a spoon.

    Don't rush it :)

We tried rice cereal last week at 4 months and he hated it. We tried oatmeal the next day and he tolerated it. We later tried sweet potatos and he seem ambivalent. I honestly just don't think he is ready for solids yet. We will try every week or so. Some are ready at this age and others aren't. I'm guessing by 5 months he'll be a bit more interested.
  • I agree with the others that he's probably not ready. Babies are usually ready sometime between 4 to 6 months so there's quite a range of when he might be ready. Just for the record for the posters that don't plan on starting until 6 months, obviously that's your call but I would follow your baby's cues instead of just a 6 month guideline. There's a lot of new research showing starting earlier [than 6 months] helps decrease the allergy risk.

Also, you definitely don't have to start with rice cereal. I skipped it all together with DS1.

  • Sounds like he's not ready.  What I'd look for is - doubled birth weight, is a supported sitter (minimal, sits on own is better), and shows interest.  Otherwise he should be fine on breastmilk/formula for now.

  • I would skip the cereal part, give your baby instead, fruits and vegetales: you'll find a complete list here https://goodmomming.com/ with all the solids that are recommended for a specific age and the solids you should avoid WHEN YOUR BABY IS READY!
