I would take it and not skip a single dose. It's pregnancy class B so it's safe. You sound like you're having an initial herpes 1 outbreak and the chest pain you described likely means the lesions are in your throat too. It doesn't cure it but helps to shorten the duration of your outbreak and help prevent future ones. Remember that it's highly contagious now, so no kissing anyone or sharing things that could exchange saliva. I really hope you feel better soon, it sounds awful.
It's really important to take the medication as directed. You don't have genital herpes, a friend of mine does, and had to be super super strict with the medication she was given while pregnant, and she had to take a lot! Her babies are fine, unfortunately one Is deaf, which is not from the medication, unfortunately it is most likely from having active outbreaks whilst giving birth. It is very sad, and I don't mean to scare you. I got cold sores as a baby, because my mum had them when she gave birth, and kissed me!! I have now had them my whole life, but if my doctor suggested I take any kind of antiviral, I would for sure!
It is actually pretty common to be prescribed herpes meds during pregnancy. My husband's cold sores became my herpes infection a few months before I got pregnant. I will be taking an antiviral daily starting at 36 weeks as a preventative measure. Take your meds, so you won't have to worry about passing this on to your LO. Even if it is oral type you can give it to a young baby easily and it can be very serious in a newborn. My doctor said even fatal. If I end up with an outbreak I will have to have a c-section the risks are so high.
If it was my dr I wouldn't have any problems taking it because she knows pregnancy. If it was the ER dr I would ask my OB first since ER dr's have to know everything and not specialized like the OB.

Did YOUR dr prescribe it or did the ER dr?
