Utencils - does your little one feed him/herself?

I'm OCD neat freak so I haven't let him spoon feed himself very much. I let him do it on the weekend and I noticed it took a really long time (This is good, I can clean while he's busy) and he was pretty good at it. He has very simple Munchkin spoons. I was wondering if anyone has picked a fork or are they using a spork? Any recs?

  • I wont let her spoon feed her self since it gets super messy but I do let her stab pieces of stuff with a fork and she feeds herself well that way, I figure once she's mastered that we'll try more messy things. I use the plastic utencils from Ikea with my oldest and DD uses the forks but we just bought some cheap toddler spoons to use for her since the ikea spoons are way to big for her right now.

  • Lucia uses forks and spoons.  Forks are easier for her because the food usually doesn't slide off, as opposed to the spoon that she sometimes tips over.  I cannot remember what brand I bought, but they are small and have metal tines.  I bought them from BRU.   She can use our real forks too, but the small ones are easier.  I don't like forks with plastic tines because it is hard to pick up food with them.

I usually start the meal without them, and then when she stops eating and starts playing, I offer her a fork, which usually helps her to start eating again.

  • A is pretty good at it. She's great with the fork, still working on the spoon and has never used a knife. We use the Nuk set. The forks are pointy enough to stab things but not enough to hurt her mouth. I tried some plastic ones and sporks. She got frustrated with those because the food would always slide off.

  • Ramona uses both spoons and forks pretty well, but she's been using them for a while. Honestly I think neat freak (in this situation) gets in the way of LO being able to practice.

Totally agree. Which is why I'm going to let go and let him get crazy and messy.  I'm a semi-reformed control freak so every time I feel the need to be in control I force myself to let go. I don't want my kid to think his Mama is a spazz.

  • Madison uses a fork really well but only uses a spoon if I put the food on it and I only let her do it a few times bc then she starts tossing the food.

Laney throws them on the floor. I do give them to her though.

Yup, about the same here.  Allison is better with a spoon (I put the food on it by guiding her hand) than a fork.  I may go try the forks mollysm mentioned since the plastic ones are too hard to stab food with.

But she also gives up pretty quick (that is when they end up on the floor) and goes back to her hands.

  • Addy can use a fork pretty well but I have to stab things for her quite a bit, she can do it some of the time. This is for things like banana pieces though, not like chicken, I don't think she could do that.

  • Skyler uses spoons and forks.  She is getting better and faster with them so she doesn't throw them when she loses patience anymore.  She has a plastic set and a Playtex (I think) set that has a large handle and a metal end and it works the best.  She doesn't get incredibly messy, usually with a bib she just has slightly messy hands and mouth.  I use a suction bowl which helps because it stays in place when she's trying to get the food on the utensil.
