NBR: foster kitty!

I've been volunteering with a local cat rescue since I was 13, mostly taking in orphaned kittens that need to be bottle fed. Occasionally I'll take in others when I can. Lately I've been trying to help as much as possible because I don't have a lot else going on. I recently took in a mom and 6 kittens, but they went back to the rescue this weekend because they're nearly adoptable.

On Sunday, someone brought in this little baby:

I don't know his story, but he couldn't have been more than a few hours old, and was still pretty warm when he came in. He had originally gone to a different foster home, but she was unable to get him to eat, so yesterday, she brought him back to the rescue, and I took him in. He's been eating like a champ for me, so I think she was probably inexperienced with bottle feeding and just didn't quite get it.

Normally I'll take in newborns for a few days to get them stable and to give the rescue time to find a more long-term foster home, but since I've got so much free time right now, I'll probably take care of this one until he's weaned. And BF is going to get some practice with waking up in the middle of the night for feedings!

  • Omg so cute! We rescued our cat at 3.5 weeks so she was almost weaned. Weaning is messy haha. She'd get milky wet food all over her face while learning to lick and not suckle. I definitely miss it! Enjoy your foster kitten!!! :D

  • I love foster kitties. When I was mgr for Petco people used to dump them all the time. Sometimes I would help our adoption agency and foster. I loved it so much and it was so rewarding seeing them get homes. Nice job!

I used to work as a pet photographer for a company that was contracted by Petco. I used to bring home so many animals that were dumped. Several kittens, a few hamsters, mice, rats, a rabbit, a guinea pig, a snake, and a dog. I don't keep nearly so many critters these days, although I kind of miss it. It's a lot easier not having to clean so many cages all the time, though.

It's amazing how many people dump their pets. One time we had a ten year old Golden Retiever dropped off for grooming and never picked up!!! What kind of horrible person does that? She was so sweet too! Our local Golden rescue took her after a couple of days. We had to hold onto her for two days just in case.

  • Ahh I love bottle babies! My favorite foster baby was a kitten I raised from about three days to twelve weeks. I so wanted to keep her but we had just adopted a kitten from my previous foster litter.
