Slowly, slowly, DS is learning to STTN. Last night he slept for over 8 HOURS STRAIGHT!! He has never slept this long before.
We have been sleep training him since just before his first birthday and it's been 2 steps forward, 1 step back so I am not at all expecting him to sleep that long every night. But we have made such great improvement. Many nights he has slept 6 hours without waking. When we started he was waking every 45 min to 3 hours. We're getting there!
I am just so excited, proud of him, and proud of DH and I for working together and sticking with it. It has been really hard on all of us, but so worth it!
Thanks for letting me AW. ![]()
Re: It's happening...
That's awesome! We are struggling as well. DS will STTN in bed, but not in the crib. I know I need to get him out the bed, but it's been a struggle and we've been so exhausted, having STTN in our bed has just been easy way out for us. Sometimes he will stay all night in the crib, but if he wakes up in middle of the night, he refuses to go back tin the crib.
I am going to start the battle of keeping him in the crib all night.
I am glad it is working for you, I will definitely let you know if I need some tips or support, I know it has to be hard.
This is us as well. Pretty much the exact same situation.
Rocknrollfriend, that is SO awesome! I know it's been a long process for you guys, I'm happy to hear that you're seeing results!
Thank you ladies.
I would be more than happy to offer any help I can. From advice to experience to just plain encouragement. It is very hard emotionally and physically so you definitely need to be ready to stick with it before you start.
What method are you doing? Now that I'm out for the summer (DH and I are both teachers) I'm thinking of doing the Sleep Lady Shuffle. I'm really, really, really opposed to CIO and the couple of times we've tried it, it doesn't work, DS just gets more and more worked up and keeps screaming, so we have to do something else.
I'm so jealous!!! CIO worked like magic when Jane was 11 months, but she's had a series of ear infections and sleeping has taken a back seat. Maybe someday we'll be back to sleeping again!
We pretty much followed the Sleep Lady Shuffle. There was plenty of crying, especially the first few nights, but it was because he was mad, not sad, if that makes sense. And we were both right there to reassure and encourage him. At this age, I felt like he understood what we were trying to do. The first night he cried off and on for 90 min [very little screaming] and I was shocked that he eventually laid down and went to sleep. I really couldn't envision him doing it, but he did. The second night it took less than an hour, and the third night it took 15 min. Amazing.
The first few weeks we only worked on bedtime, to keep the stress level down for all of us. We're working on night wakings now. That's a little different than the Sleep Lady method. We also have received consultations from The Baby Sleep Site, which have helped us tailor our plan to something that works for us. I highly recommend it if you're feeling uncertain or like none of the readily available methods will work for you.
