Georgia Babies

moving to Atlanta area

hello! My husband and I will be relocating from RI to the Dunwoody area of Georgia. He already has a job waiting for him and we are planning on flying down in Sept to look at houses.

We are waiting to try because I will graduate in the summer of 2014. But a few months before graduating I plan on getting off the pill.

I am a nanny and I teach pre-school. Any schools worth checking out in the area? Also anything you can tell me about the area we are looking to move would be great!  Places to eat, stay, things to do. Thanks so much :)

Re: moving to Atlanta area

  • Dunwoody is a very nice area.  The downside is traffic!  Perimeter Mall is there and it's a really good mall.  There are lots of great restaurants over there. I think Ryan Seacrest is from Dunwoody!

  • I live in Dunwoody.  We rent because, frankly, the house prices are too high to be practical.  However, price aside, it is a great place to live.  Gorgeous playgrounds, great schools, lots of cultural events, etc.  Dunwoody Elementary School district is highly sought after.  As PP said, the traffic is literally a nightmare.  There are places and times of day that it can take an hour to go a mile, and I am not exaggerating.  You really need to live close to where you work (or work really odd hours).

There are lots of great little daycares and preschools around here.  Don't be alarmed when you google Dunwoody daycare and all you see is about this one shooting.  It was a domestic abuse thing that happened outside a daycare, and it is no reflection of the crime here.

  • Thank you both so much for the replies! Compared to Rhode Island, buying a house in Georgia is insanely cheaper!! That makes me so happy about the school system :) we will definitely be having children once we get out there.
  • Depending on where your husband's job is, you might consider some other areas within commuting distance to Dunwoody.  East Cobb/Marietta, for example, has awesome schools and people commute to Perimeter all the time.  My husband and I chose to buy up here because of the schools and he drives to Perimeter every day.  You could also include Sandy Springs, Brookhaven and Riverside in your search.  Depending on your price point, you'll find more of what you're looking for in different areas. I'm a real estate agent and would be happy to help you if you need it.  No pressure though, of course! :)
