Child birth classes

I got a sign up paper from my dr today for classes, and it says that it's a 3 day class only on Tuesday nights and my fianc works nights through the week.. I have other people who could go along but the whole point was so it could benefit us both. I don't understand why they wouldn't have a couple dif class days, maybe a weekend day too! Ugh. Frustrating. Vent over!!

Re: Child birth classes

  • If he plans on being your coach during delivery then he needs to be there. If he can't get off work or you can't find a different time, then I'd look for a new set of classes. You don't have to go through your hospital for childbirth classes. There are tons of privately operated companies that offer child birth classes (like hypnobabies, lamaze, bradley, etc.), just do a google search in your area.

  • You don't have to go to the one your doctor uses. You can use any childbirth class in the area. Type it into Google and see what comes up.

My hospital does birth classes, but we are taking a custom birth class from our doula.

You might call the hospital and see if they have other options. Ours offers some during the week and on weekends. I'm sure you're not the only one who can't go during the week. There may even be a different place that offers classes on another day. Good Luck!

  • Definitely check other places in the area, including other hospitals, birth centers, non profits and private birth education centers.

  • Call first to confirm that those really are the only options, if so I would suggest looking for a class outside of your hospital.  If he is going to be the one with you during labor it would be most beneficial for him to take it with you.

  • He really should be with you, especially if you want him to help you during labor. Our hospital offers weeknight classes, along with weekend classes. We chose the weekend class, and just had it this past weekend. I am really glad DH was there, he told me he learned so much and was able to ask questions of the instructor. The instructor also pulled each couple off to the side to discuss any fears or concerns we may have.

So if your hospital doesn't offer weekends, see if you could take them at a different hospital or location. Our hospital allows people delivering elsewhere to attend their classes.

Is there anywhere else you can take Child Birth Classes? Our delivery hospital and classes are an hour away from us. They were also offering a once a week for 6 weeks course from 7 -9 pm however this is SO not condusive for our schedules since my husband usually has to be to work between 3-5am and with an hour drive both ways on top of it, just wasn't going to work. Our OB/GYN offices also offer a one day saturday course that we could take. We chose this option instead, it just worked out way better for us. But maybe also check your surrounding areas for child birth classes at a different time or day that might work better, or maybe even ask at planned parenthood?
