Sippy cup HELP

My son is a year old and EBF.  He will take bottles but every time we try sippy cups he HATES them. We've tried a few different brands and he has cried for all but the Munchkin ones but he doesn't seem to be able to get the milk out of it no longer how long he sucks. We've also tried straw cups and although he's gotten a few sips here and there he doesn't seem to really get it.

Are there any sippy cups that are easier than others? Any suggestions on what brands to try? I don't want to spend a million dollars trying new brands but I'm at a loss.

THANKS!

Re: Sippy cup HELP

  • When transitioning my son, I used a super basic straw cup. I used the playtex little grippers straw cup, but you could use a little juice box and squeeze a little into his mouth. I also drank from a straw cup, which he liked to use. Monkey see, monkey do, I guess.

If you are looking for a regular sippy, maybe try a take n toss. They don't have valves and are cheap.

We have always used straw cups. I think you need to give it a bit longer for him to learn to use it.  It took my daughter a few days or week maybe but she got the hang of it.  We used the Playtex ones at first but now we mostly use the take n toss and the Zoli ones.

  • Some EBF babies do best with an open top cup.  Shot glasses work really well since they are tiny and hold little amounts of fluid.

  • I would strongly recommend the take 'n toss cups. My 10-month-old transitioned from breast/bottles to this cup in a matter of days. The trick (I think) is while they have little holes in the spout to slow the flow of liquid, there's not actually a plug or a stopper requiring them to suck, since they don't get that they have to yet. Just lift and tilt and the perfect amount of liquid comes out. Not to mention they're cheap, semi-disposable and come in a pack of four. They're awesome! You can also use even through the toddler years. My 2.5 year old and 10 month old use the same cups now - it's ultra convenient.

  • Agree with take n toss. It is only only thing our daycare uses and the younger kids get it pretty easy.

  • Have you tried the Nuby No-Spill sippy cups.  My DD was EBF until just over a year when I started transitioning her to cow's milk with a sippy.  I tried several different ones and these were the only one's that worked for her.

I have a daycare center and we've had speech therapists work with some of our children. They are very pro-straw cups. It requires the child to make a sucking motion which is good for oral development, and in turn better for speech. Regular sippy cups allow the child to be "lazy" about drinking and they are not recommended by them (if you care! :) )
We've had some kids with the throw away cups (which is not a straw) mentioned and they are not spill proof so they can make a mess. We've also had young children able to pull off the cover.
  • I used the Nuk Gerber Graduates cups. When I first started using them my son had that problem, too. I just took the valves out for a while until he got the hang of drinking from them. They spill a little without the valves but not a lot. The take n toss are good for disposable uses but DS tended to chew on the spout.

Thanks guys! I wanted to skip sippy cups and go to straw but I'm not sure how to teach him how to do it. We have the playtex ones that you can squeeze a bit so it comes out to show him there's bm in there but he doesn't seem to understand that he needs to suck the straw. Maybe bill try an open cup too he does love drinking from my bottles of water!!

We started with the Avent sippys they were easy for DD to get her milk out of, we then moved to Nuby no spill.  She initally could not get anything out of the nuby ones.

    IT'S A GIRL

  • DS started using a straw in a regular cup just so he got the idea of how to suck.  Once he figured it out (didn't take long, one meal? maybe?), we went to the straw cups and sippies from Munchkin.  He is fine with both but prefers the straw cups.

I'm going to have to try the take n toss now that everyone's recommended them.
