Babies: 6 - 9 Months

When Do Babies Start Clapping?

A friend of mine recently posted a video on Facebook of her five month old clapping. LO has yet to do this. No matter how hard I try, she refuses. She will take two toys and hit them together or put her hands on mine and move my hands. She just doesn't have an interest in doing it with her own hands.

When do babies typically learn how to do it on their own?

  • My DD is just a little younger than yours, and she doesn't either. I have been wondering when she will start waving bye and clapping as well, but they all do things in their own time. She has been ahead of some babies such as walking early; but was behind others on rolling over, waving, etc. They will all do things when they are ready :))

  • E is almost 9 months and doesn't clap. And when I think about it, I almost never model clapping. It's not surprising to me that he hasn't done it, since he doesn't see it often.

My 2 bigger kids are 15 months apart, and they learned to clap on the same day, 1 year apart.  DS was 11 months old, DD was almost 8 months old.  It was crazy - I went to write down when DD did it, and just checked to see when DS had and strangely enough they both learned to clap on January 23, just one year apart from each other!  Both kids are totally normal now, so I think these skills vary greatly as to when they do it!

  • My DD just started clapping last week. She'll be 9 months on Wednesday. She waved bye for about 3 days 3 weeks ago and hasn't done it since.

  • Mine just started clapping about two weeks ago. I had done it in front of him before and had moved is hands together multiple times before (we used to sing If You're Happy and You know all the time when he was about 3 months old), so it takes some time. She will do it on her own time.

  • My LO is about a month younger that yours but I don't think she's anywhere close to clapping. I try to teach her but she's still so tense that it isn't happening. She does the same thing as yours, banging two toys together, but I think she enjoys that more because it makes a good noise. I don't picture her chubby little hands making as good of a clapping noise as two toys. :)
  • Ethan will clap, but it's random. I think the only reason he does it is because we take a music class on Fridays where the teacher claps alot. I really wouldn't worry about it. Your LO will do it when she's ready.

DS has not done it either.  He is fascinated when I do it but he just won't do it.  he'll get there.

  • DD started a week or two ago. But is selective of when she will do it (ie never when I am trying to show off her new skill to Grandma, etc. LOL).

  • Mine started at 9 months and is still selective about when she'll do it.
  • My son still doesn't clap. He likes to slap his legs (or mine haha) and make that noise to slap, but he doesn't really like (or get) clapping yet. I'd love for him to clap, but I'm not worried. It's funny when he slaps his legs like something is really funny ;)
