Tailbone Pain

I've been having a lot of tailbone pain that extends down my right leg. I have a hard time getting comfortable sitting or laying down and standing and walking hurt too.

Anyone have any suggestions that might help? I've tried yoga, which hasn't helped much. Would going to a chiropractor do anything? I've never been to one before so don't really know what to expect.

    I mentioned it to my OB today at my appt and she suggested getting a special cushion/pillow to sit on.  Mine only hurts from sitting for extended periods of time, though, not when I'm walking or laying.  A chiropractor might be worth a shot to see if it helps.

  • Massage, chiro or acupuncture could all help (how much depends on what is causing it; if it's inflammation, acu could help, but if it's a physical joint issue, then probably not; the others could help either way).  My mw suggested seeing a chiro for sciatic nerve and tailbone pain.

    Slouching makes this way worse for me and i can almost totally avoid tailbone pain (at least at this point) by not slouching and/or sitting on an exercise ball.

  • I had horrible pain in mine as well and I sit all day for work.  My masseuse told me to sleep with a pillow between my knees to keep my hips aligned and ever since I started, no pain at all. 

    She also suggested doing kegals (as they strengthen all your pelvic muscles and in turn, help your tail bone) and bonus is it will help with delivery too.

  • The chiropractor would definitely help. If you have pain going down your leg it's possible your hip is misaligned putting pressure on a nerve. I go once a month to get my hips adjusted and that's helped with the tailbone pain a lot. My chiro always asks if I have any pain extending down into my legs but so far I haven't.

    I would absolutely recommend this. It really does help!

    I broke my tailbone a few years ago, so it pretty much hurts every time I sit for a period longer than 20 minutes, but I know that it feels much less painful if:

    A) I make an effort to sit up as straight as possible
    B) I sit on soft, but firm surfaces. Nothing that would misalign my hips, but nothing hard, either.

    Sorry that you are dealing with this, it really is a pain.

  • I was having this and went for a massage this past weekend.  Ends up it's sciatic and the masseuse really worked on that nerve area.  I almost went through the roof at first but after 5 minutes it started to feel really good.  On the other side similar but different pain and she said I am overcompensating so that hip is all messed up.  Afterward I had to ice the area.  5 days later and I feel the best I have in months.  I am saving up to go again next month.
