Teething advice

My little guy finally started to get a tooth (I was starting to get worried for a while there LOL!).  He has been pretty fussy and clingy so I know it is bothering him.  I put that numbing stuff on his gums, but he hates it.  He also won't take any teethers.  I have tried the kind that you put in the freezer, one that is like a pacifier, etc. but he has no interest.  He basically looks at it, drops it and then continues crawling everywhere like usual.  Any other ideas about how I can help him feel better?  I guess I could try to fill his regular pacifiers with water and freeze them to see if that works but that's all I've got. Thanks in advance

Re: Teething advice

  • Hylands Teething Tablets work pretty good for immediate relief, but it doesn't last too long.  For us, the best thing is Motrin.

My LO was never into chewing on cold or frozen things either.  His favorite teething toy was the Sophie giraffe.  He also really likes chewing on the Avent soothie pacifier.  He doesn't use the pacifier but he'll chew it like crazy.  Sophie and the soothie are both soft and chewy so I guess that's what he prefers.

  • Don't use the gum gel, it can get into the back of their throat and become a choking hazard because they can't feel themselves swallow.

As pp said, Hylands teething tablets are good. Camilia drops are also good. We also got a mesh feeder bag and I put frozen breastmilk ice cubes in there and frozen watermelon for him to chew on. If he is really uncomfortable I have used Tylenol (haven't tried Motrin).

  • We haven't had to use it yet, but I have Orajel naturals on stand by. It's basically pure clove oil, with something to help the taste. (Have you ever tasted that stuff?) Clove oil is what I was given to help the pain of a dry socket when I had my wisdom teeth removed. It isn't numbing but it is instant pain relief, if you can get past the taste. We haven't tried Hyland's either, but I've heard amazing things!
  • Teething biscuits, wet washcloth, Sophie, Tylenol.  My DS goes for anything rubber when he's teething.  He likes to chew on my rubber spatula.  He also loves his vibrating teether. There are some other interesting teethers out there. Maybe buy a few and see what he likes?
