Melatonin during pregnancy?

Im having the hardest time getting good sleep so Id like to take some melatonin, but I'm reading conflicting things. Any of you take this or have you heard if its safe?
Thanks!

Re: Melatonin during pregnancy?

  • It's probably not the best idea, mostly because its going to make it harder for you to go to sleep after you stop taking it. Try taking a shower or bath before bed. The change in temp can help you fall asleep.

  • My OB recommended Benadryl, but don't take anything without checking with your OB first. No two are going to agree on the same things.

  • My OBGYN def said no melatonin during pregnancy.  I take it on a regular basis and had to give it up.  I'm actually allowed to take Unisom for morning sickness which is actually a sleep aid, so that might help.  Ask your doctor though.
  • I was told to stop Melatonin and take 1/2 a Unisom sleep tab or some benadryl to sleep instead.

  • Mine says not safe for children under 13, that it can cause seizures. I'm not taking it for now. Try something natural in the meantime.

I have a hellavue time staying awake, are you taking naps during the day?

  • TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR.

A board of internet strangers will not provide sufficient evidence (unless anecdotal is enough for you) to support you ingesting something to be processed by you AND your baby.

  • My doc says no melatonin as well. Unisom and Benadryl were recommended instead.  I also found that the Dramamine I was taking for nausea last time would make me drowsy too. I have used that when I had m/s.
  • I believe it says do not take if pregnant on the bottle itself. Better safe than sorry especially in the first trimester, I've had bad insomnia off and on this whole time.. It sucks.

  • Try warm milk with a touch of honey vanilla extract. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Warmed milk releases tryptophan, a natural sleep inducing chemical in the brain. Just a small mug will do. You don't want to be up all night. If you wake in the night it's fine then toono morning hangover like sleep meds. Use your five senses to sip, relax, and ......sleep. :
