Multiple destination vacation with baby

I've been doing a lot of reading on traveling with a baby but can't find advice for my question. We're stationed in Asia and we're planning a month long vacation around Avie's 1st birthday. By that time it will be about 2 and a half years since we've been back in the states to see family. It's an expensive trip that can't happen often so we definitely want to see our families while we're there.

Here are our flights:

  1. 7hrs to Hawaii (Layover for 1 hr)
  2. 5hrs to San Francisco (3 days in SF to decompress from such a long travel)
  3. 5hrs to New York (stay 10-14 days with my family)
  4. 5hrs to LA (stay 10 days with his family/friends)
  5. Drive to San Francisco (stay 4 days with family)
  6. Go back home 5hrs to Hawaii (Layover for 1hr)
  7. 7hrs to Home

Is this too much air travel for a 1yr old all within one month? The legs of the trip in bold are non-negotiable because its the main way of travel. Will the rest of air travel stress her system because it's all in one month? Not to mention the possible mini travels within those cities. I'm looking for tips / suggestions / things to watch out for. It's stressful enough just thinking about it and planning the details but we're looking forward to seeing loved ones and having Avie meet all her cousins (she doesn't have playmates here).

Okay I mentioned the legs of the trip in bold and my whole post is in bold ;) What I'm referring to are #1, 2, 6, 7.

  • Have you flown with her before? This is probably highly dependent on the personalities of you and your LO. For me personally, that much flying sounds like a horrible, horrible nightmare lol.

Could your family meet you in Hawaii or California? A fun vacation for them and easier for you?

Honestly, I might do it if it were the only chance I had to see my family.
  • Wow. That is quite the vacation. I've never flown with my kids so this is all just my opinion with zero experience.
    1. I think you have enough down time in between flights.
    2. I think moving from place to place may confuse and possibly mess up her sleeping.
    3. Have fun!

Haven't flown with her before. Which is probably why I'm super nervous about having so many that we can't back out of once I book tickets lol.

I tried to plan it out so that there was enough down time in between and chose the drive from LA to SF, so that we didn't have to do another flight.

I'm dreading what her jet lag and sleep schedule will be like though. Although during our outings, she's usually really good to us and doesn't fuss too much.

If you're worried, could you amalgamate the SF stays into one longer stretch on either side of your trip rather than two shorter stays? That is the only thing I would tweak. Maybe stay in SF for a week at the beginning and fly our of LA on the way back?

That's a good idea. I'll definitely look into that. It usually is cheaper to do roundtrips though so I hope it's not too expensive to change. Our first & last 2 legs (Asia to SF via layover in Hawaii and back) are on United. The domestic trips are Virgin America.

  • Wow I don't envy you I couldn't do that with twins the packing alone would kill me haha! I agree with previous person the SF trip seems like a lot for short time. Have fun!
  • Virgin America is nice.

I'd worry about the hour layover because if your next flight is in a different terminal, it can be hard to make it. And you'll have to do customs in Hawaii and recheck your bags, I believe. Or at least that's what I have had to do when I had layovers in the States. But, as far as the travel, kids are resilient and it may throw LO off a little but kids forgive. It's too important to pass up IMO.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • My parents did similar trips with me when I was 9 months. (My dad was stationed in Okinawa) The only difference is once we made it to PA from CA my parents just drove to the different places. I do believe you will be alright. You have a lot of down time. The only other thing is not only all of the new things, but also the different time zones will probably throw LO's sleep schedule if you are on one.

Good luck and enjoy your visit!

  • It seems like you have enough rest time between flights. Seeing family is important so I would have a hard time passing it up. Yeah her nap times and sleep schedule may be a mess, but she is young and these types of trips are rare. We are flying 2 hrs on Thursday! I have no idea what to expect but I figure she will help keep me distracted since I hate flying.
