Housecleaning question

Since I'm off during the summer, I took a second job cleaning houses. Now of course, it's only been for my grandma, parents, and sister, but still, money is money. Anyway, my mom told one of her good friends that I would clean hers if she wanted. Her friend took her up on the offer and hired me to "deep clean" her house. I am going over around noon tomorrow to start on it because she is on vacation this week. She told my mom she was leaving a $200 check for me. My question is for $200 and a description for the cleaner of "deep clean", what would you expect to be done? My grandma is paying me $10/ hour so $200 seems like a lot of money, so I want to do an excellent job. Thanks for any input.

Re: Housecleaning question

  • To me a deep clean would be cleaning everything from floor to ceiling. Basic stuff like dusting, vacuuming, cleaning counters, mopping. Then things you don't do on a regular basis like dusting fans, clean windows, wipe down walls and baseboards, clean blinds, etc. I googled and found a checklist that sounds about right to me. Sorry not clicky

I don't know about the $$ aspect (whether or not $200 is appropriate reimbursement for a deep clean) but here is what I would expect (for the record, I'm obsessive compulsive so I imagine this will be different for other people):

    - dust/wipe down all available surfaces including countertops, tables, accent furniture, kitchen cabinets (inside/out), floor baseboards, window blinds - basically, anything that looks soiled/dusty needs to be cleaned (includes pictures on walls and picture frames/knick knacks on surfaces)

    - wash insides of windows and clean window sills/tracks - gently vacuum curtains if they have any

    - clean dust/grime off ceiling fans & air vents

    - vacuum carpets/scrub kitchen & bathroom floors (baking soda is your friend here - throw some on the carpet before you vacuum and it will make the whole house smell fresh)

    - clean toilets and showers

    - vacuum off upholstered furniture

That's all I can think of off the top of my head, I'm sure others will have additional suggestions.

That checklist is great! I'm a list person and really need a list! Thanks.

  • We had out house deep cleaned before we moved in. Walls, windows, mirrors, molding, ceiling fans, bannisters, grout, toilets inside and out. They even cleaned one of the toilet paper holders that looked dirty. They scrubbed every surface in the house, wiped frames of pictures we'd hung, cleaned our oven and refrigerator, oiled our cabinets, washed the floors on their hands and knees, wiped down register covers and cleaned under them and vacuumed out our return vent.
  • I figure it will take a whole day, but I have to break it up into two half days because I won't get it done with DD with me, so my mom is keeping her. Looks like I'm going to be working my butt off.

You're welcome. I'm going to save it too. I feel like I'm so busy with the daily cleaning that I forget to do the deep cleaning stuff as often as I want. A list will probably help with that.
