July 2012 Moms

missed their first word?

So, Jackson has been saying "mama" and "dada" for a couple of months but i always chalked it up to "eh, he doesn't know what he's saying "

Then, my cousin, who had an Oct '12 baby, just wrote on FB "baby just said his first word, "daddy" while looking at me wearing glasses!" And everyone's freaking out.

Waaahhh! Can our kids "talk"? Am i being neurotic?

  • I guess i was picturing it like the movies where the baby is all silent and then looks at his mother and says, "ma.....ma." it's all good....now i'm watching the episode of Full House where DJ marries her Greek cousin and my A.D.D is focused elsewhere.

  • DS1 was extremely speech delayed so I didn't expect that Camden would say anything early but he says: mama, dada, bubba and ball.

He will point at us when he says it and every time he gets a ball or sees a ball he starts squealing and saying "baa". I didn't think too much of it until my dad pointed it out and sure enough he is saying ball!

I was like you and never thought kids were "talking" mainly because DS1 didn't! Cortlandt didn't say mama or dada until he was 2 and a half years old!
  • I wouldn't be able to tell you at what point either of mine said their first word that actually counted. Neither of mine say words clearly but what they say sounds close to what they want to say. Like Emma says "tss" if she sees you are taking a picture so we count it as her saying "cheese".  She also says "ba" for bye.  Liam is obsessed with balls and wakes up asking for his "baw." it's funny because he started off saying "ta" for the Spanish word pelota but I guess ball is easier to say!  I have yet to hear a clear "mama" from either of them unless they are upset or yelling :P

  • Cooper says a variation of Baylee, our dog, when he chases her or is asked where she is. He repeated yucky when H moves him from something yucky. Mamama and dada. It took me a while to realize exactly what he was doing.

Lilah says Momma only to me or when she wants out of her crib.

    She says:

Kitty or Hi Kitty...sounds like Hi Key

Dog or Hi Dog...sounds like Hi Daw.

    She says thank you.

    She says ooooh baby. lol

    i think thats it....

  • We ask cooper where the deer is and she will look around till she finds a mount and then point and say deer. She also shrieks DADA when my hubby pulls in the driveway and she sees him. She says bye bye while waving when we part. And says momma when she cries.
And yesterday she started this new thing where she holds the remote to her ear and says ha dada like she is trying to say hi dada
I think our babies are definitely talking. It's so sad

  • Audrey has a few words that she uses consistently, without prompting, though pronunciation isn't quite yet perfect...

hat (she gets SUPER excited when she sees anyone wearing one),

that (points to what she wants),

up (sounds like uck, when she wants to be picked up,

    down (when she wants down)

    dada,

doggy (sounds just like dada, unfortunately),

hi (she'll look at you and say it while waving),

and ball (sounds like 'gaw' but she says it when she sees balls and other roundish things, including an egg i got out for breakfast this morning).

  • My daughter clearly says mama for me and my son says dada but more in babbling.
  • LO says mama and dada but I think "most" of the time she is just babbling.  She will wave if we tell her to wave bye bye but she never actually says bye bye. I figure she will get it when she is ready.
  • Bryson crawls up to me saying "Mama" all the time and if my husband enters the room, he squeals "Daaadaaaa!"  When he sees someone for the first time or himself in my iPhone, he says "Hey," and says a version of "thank you" when you give him something.  They can definitely talk!
