Trouble with Stage 3 Foods and Meat

My son started out so well, eating just about any veggie or fruit I put in front of him.  Now that we're getting into the stage 3 foods, he's decided to get picky.  I haven't had any luck with stage 3 foods or meat in general.  In fact, some things he dislikes to the point of gagging, and then makes himself throw up.

Help! I'd like it if he could feed himself some day!

Re: Trouble with Stage 3 Foods and Meat

  • Mine didn't either. She has resisted every new stage of food. We just went back to stage 2 food for awhile and now we are switching btw stage two and three in the same sitting. It seems to help her.

  • Gagging and throwing up is normal with stage 3 foods (according to our ped).  We just moved to table food at that point.

  • Stage 3s are a struggle for lots of babies.  They're used to everything that arrives on a spoon to be smooth and they don't realize it needs to be chewed so they try to swallow without chewing and gag.  I would too :)  But if you give them a PIECE of food, they gum it and suck on it and then swallow it so you might want to skip the chunky purees.

Have you tried just giving him table food? My kid hated baby food at that age but would eat our food with no issues.

    This.

My DD hated baby food unless it is the very thin starter food. She would do the same thing, gag until she vomited. We went right to table food after that and loves to feed herself.

  • The stage 3 food is awful.  My kid who does very well with table food gags and hates stage 3 foods.  I just give him table food now.

  • Have you tried just feeding him real meat?  That baby meat is nasty.  My son gagged and I did too.  It smells like dog food.

He loves fish, pork tenderloin, chicken and steak.  We just cut it up in very very small pieces and feed to him.  I quit buying the pureed meats and such.  I do still buy pureed fruits that are handy to have in the diaper bag if we're out and about.

  • This is rather forward... Geez.  I bothered with stage 3 foods because I obviously didn't know any better.  How nice of your pedi to save you the hassle... mine didn't.

Does your LO eat any table food yet?

You might find this website helpful - it gives food recommendations for quantities and ages for pureed and solid/finger foods: https://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/

He does eat table food.  I wanted to get him to take some stage 3's as well to make sure he was getting enough.  Quite a bit of the table food ends up in his high chair or on the floor.
