Weight Loss with Thyroiditis (hypothyroidism)??

Hi!  I'm 5 months postpartum and was diagnosed with hypothyroidism.  I will be taking synthroid starting tomorrow.  My doctor said that weightloss may be challenging with a hypothyroid problem.  Has anyone experienced this and had success losing weight with hypothyroidism?  Please let me know your thoughts...As if losing the baby weight wasn't difficult enough :(

Re: Weight Loss with Thyroiditis (hypothyroidism)??

  • I suffered hypothyroidism after having DS. Before getting pregnant, my level was 8.5 before going on Synthroid. It skyrocketed to 109.4 after having DS. It took a few months to get the level down to normal. When I set my mind to it, I lost the baby weight usig sparkpeople and fitbit. It came off easier than I feared. Good luck!

  • I have hypothyroidism also, and I tend to be able to lose weight if I am VERY deligent. It definitely doesn't come off as easy as it did before, but I have made some (very slow) progress. Sometimes you just have to play around with different food combinations and track food and exercise. I use myfitnesspal, but there are many good apps out there :) good luck.
  • thank you ladies!  any foods (dairy or gluten) that you can recommend avoiding or adding to my diet?
  • I think a lot of water and try to eat protein.  I was having cereal in the morning but would be starving long before lunch.  I eat eggs on a whole wheat English muffin.  I make them n cupcake pans on Sunday and they stay for the week.  I also eat turkey pepperoni and cheese as a snack.  I've lost eighteen pounds in six months.  Good luck!

  • Hypothyroid makes it a BEAR to drop weight.  I focus instead on how I'm feeling and how my clothes are fitting.  I'd rather be concerned with looking good in my clothes and having muscle definition than about what the scale says.

  • I had hypothyroidism after my last pregnancy. After getting on bioidentical thyroid hormones  (non-synthetic) I was able to drop fat. It has been 2 1/2 years and I still take it. This pregnancy is awesome compared to my last one because of it in that I am gradually gaining weight and my energy level is good.

  • I have been dx hypo for a year (and prob had it much longer).  I gained 50lbs after showing serious symptoms and have gone from a sz 8 to a sz 14.  I am 2 months into going gluten free because I read a lot of positive things about going gluten free for Hashi's patients.  I have read mixed info about caloric intake for hypo patients.  Some say as long as you are medicated, you should eat like a normal person dieting and others say treated hypo patients still need fewer calories.  I have been eating between 1000 and 1200 calories a day and still not success.

I think all hypo patients react to dieting and exercise a little differently.  Good luck! I hope you find what works for you!

  • I became hypo after first pregnancy. Was having hard time losing weight before starting synthroid. Used myfitnesspal app to help with portion control and calories. Exercised, took meds, and ate healthier. Made all the difference. Be disciplined and positive.
