High-Risk Pregnancy

Please share your rescue cerclage story - UPDATE

Long story short, my doctor has finally agreed to a cerclage. I'm 23 weeks 3 days. Please share your rescue cerclage stories. How far along were you? What was your cervix "situation" Did they put you completely under or give you an epi? What was your outcome. I'll admit I'm very nervous/scared right now. My cervix is back at 1.8 and I'm funneling. My fear is if I choose to do nothing continue with the Prog.supps and bed rest this little boy will be born early. On the other hand, rescue cerclages have their own risks. I'm damned if I do, damned if I don't. But I think I have a better chance with a cerclage.

UPDATE: The team of MFMs met and the consensus was to NOT do the cerclage because I'm contracting. They say say a cerclage could put me in PTL and rupture my cervix. They've started me on Indocin every four hours. They're keeping me here overnight and if contractions stop, they'll send me home or I can choose to remain here. My urine culture also came back positive for Group B strep; a bladder infection they say and another reason they don't want to do the stitches.

  • Mine was put in at 21.6 at cl of 1.67cm. The next day it was 2.67. I continued with ibuprofen for awhile and have been on progesterone suppositories since the cerclage. I am on SBR at home and am at 31.3 weeks with twins! So excited to reach 32 on Saturday. It seemed SOO far away when I first started. Best wishes. It's emotional and tough and noone has the exact answers but if your doc is on board, the benefits must outweigh the risks for your situation. Join us on the bed rest check in if you'd like. :D

  • I'm also on SBR. People have differing opinions on that, but the week I was moving more, sitting up to eat, I lost almost a cm. I was holding steady before that. So back to strict for awhile. I only have 20 days left and have been on SBR for 9 weeks and 5 days.

  • Oh! and I think they did a conscious sedation. I don't remember a thing but apparently I was hilarious. Haha

  • I just had an emergent cerclage 2 weeks ago at 22.6 weeks. My cervix was measuring about .7 with funneling. It was done with a spinal. I had some contractions for a few days after but other than that recovery was no big deal. I'm now on MBR at home hoping to make it to the first goal of 28 weeks.

  • Ugh, so sorry you have a bladder infection and are contracting! I'd stay there and let them do as much as possible to keep your LO baking.

My rescue cerclage was placed at 20 weeks. I was 1.7 with funneling. They did an epi so I wasn't completely out but they also gave me so "happy drugs" so I really didnt know what the heck was going on and certainly dont remember it. Since then my cervix has measured anywhere from 1.6 - 3.3. It seems to vary with each measurement.

Sending you positive thoughts and prayers for your current situation. Keep us posted!

  • If they dont want to do a cerclage, ask about a pessary.  Its also a bit controversial, but as far as I know is harmless to your cervix if labor progresses.  I was 1.8 at 21 weeks and ultimately delivered at 25... Im hopeful that you can last many weeks on bedrest once your bladder infection is cleared up and contractions settle down.

  • Hi there-

So I just posted the other day with my rescue cerclage story. First of all-sorry that you are in this position.  I just had mine last week at exactly 21 weeks.  I was .7cm and funneling.  Just had my doc apt yesterday and I am now almost 4 cm and everything is looking good!  I have been on bed rest for the past week and while still mostly on bed rest now I've been cleared for a little bit more movement which is great.  Weekly appts now to check progress.  No injections for me at this point.

Will keep you in my prayers.
