  • I've never heard of this but sometimes when daisy gets super upset she cries so hard that she stops breathing for a few seconds, she never has passed out but it scares the shizz out of me every. Single. Time.

  • Ramona has these. We went to the hospital last month. I should have shared here but I'm not on as much anymore. The minor spells (running out of air but not passing out) happen to about 25% of babies and toddlers, the major spells (not breathing and passing out) happen to about 5%. Ramona has the major spells. It has only happened once so far but that means it's more likely to happen again.

That article is almost the exact same thing that happened to us. She was crying and just flipped over backwards and turned blue and passed out. I did mouth to mouth (which wasn't necessary, but I didn't know that the time) and called 911. She started breathing again and we went to the hospital. It was easily the scariest thing I have ever experienced.

Now when she starts to run out of breath we blow lightly in her face and it reminds her to breathe again. Nothing will be as scary as that first time because (as terrifying as it is) I know that she'll start breathing again if she does get to the point of passing out. The main concern now wis her passing out and falling and injuring herself.

  • One of my nephews used to do this, well he did it a few times. He'd get so mad, cry cry cry, hold his breath...  I don't know that he ever passed out, but he held his breath for a crazy length of time.

DS will cry so hard that he holds his breath too. Apparently it's a trait that all of DH's siblings had, as well as MIL. Not one that I wish DS would have inherited!
  • It has always made me kind of chuckle that the ped has told me "it might be easier for you if she was a breath-holder" about DD.  She's...challenging.  All the same, I cannot imagine the full on panic the first time your child does this!

  • Grey has this, since 6 months. It's terrifying each time. He passes out very rarely, normally he can catch himself and starts breathing. It terrifies him as much as me. Our doctor told us we have to be very careful how we react to it so he doesn't start doing it on purpose. Usually it's after he bonks his head or hurts himself. I pick him up and hug him. It usually is enough but not always. The other times he normally does it is when we put him in his crib and he doesn't want to. In that instance we have to jut keep going about our routine. He has gotten better.
