Whaaatt!!!

Not a regular poster on any board really but I lurk often. Couldn't help but share. So I'm leavin Kroger with my 2 young children today and I'm loading my groceries in the trunk. This guy probably about 25yrs or so comes up to me and says, " hey ma'am do you have any money because I'm tryin to get something to eat." So I had only 3 dollars cash so I gave it to him and said" oh will this help." He said like I insulted him by only giving him 3bucks " well don't you have any more bc a meal at McDonalds is like 5 or 6." My mouth dropped open and I stared at him blankly. Then when I recovered I said the time you spend standing out here you should be a man and go get an application. I could not believe it.

Re: Whaaatt!!!

  • I attract crazy people but have never had anyone insult my donation amount.

Eta: Yes I have. Lost my job in college and was told losing my job and being in school wasn't a good enough excuse to only give five bucks to help kids who lost their house in a fire.

  • My wife and I were approached by a guy outside Home Depot asking if we could give him money to get lunch at the hot dog stand.  He asked us this while pulling a cigarette out of fresh pack.

  • My husband and I go back and forth with this stuff all the time.  We will buy/give a little kid pretty much anything. We also end up just handing over some cash most of the time because we figure at least a small percentage of those people legitimately have to need it.

But if it's a possibility, we will take someone in a fast food place and buy them whatever they want or if it's a grocery store buy them a basket of things.

Also, I spend about 3 bucks every time I go to McD's because the value menu is super tasty.

  • That's crazy. I also don't understand approaching a mother with small children. If I was begging for money that would be the last person I'd approach. I'm much more guarded to a stranger approaching me when my children are with me.

  • Funny story about giving ride. My grandma once gave a guy a ride across town to his motel, which was one used by the county for men recently released from prison.

She reassured me it was safe and that he was "only arrested for a little sex crime and he told me it was an accident". That's comforting, Grandma.

I never ever give money to individuals. I do give food. I have bought a meal for many panhandlers. I also gave my shoes away once and even gave someone a ride once. Not something I recommend but the circumstances were right, including having my 140 pound dog with me, so I took the chance and I'm glad I did.
My Mom gives rides all the time. Any woman or woman + child is automatically getting a ride from her. Sometimes guys too. No one told her about stranger danger.

We were on a family road trip when I was about 10?  2 adults and 3 kids.  He saw a trucker broke down on the side of the road.  Mind, this was in SD where you can go miles on I90 without passing another car going in the opposite direction.  He stopped and picked the guy up and crammed him in the car with us.  He said, truckers always help people so you should always help a trucker.  Good life lesson Dad.  Guess he never saw Duel.

I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • If he was looking for something to eat and I just came out of a grocery store I would've given him some bread and apples or something. I don't give people cash because I don't trust them.

This! He might have been perfectly nice, but do NOT approach me when I'm with my children. I will run your a$$ over

  • I would have told him to f*ck right off.  Especially if my kids were with me, then I would have started shouting and making him uncomfortable.  It freaks me out when random strangers walk up on me when I am trying to get my kid buckled into her seatbelt.  Had it been me, I would have pepper sprayed him.

  • Yeah, 'round these parts we don't give any money to panhandlers. Most of them are not homeless or hungry. Just a bunch of kids. I knew some kids who would do this in Seattle and make a few grand a month.

Same thing in Detroit. A friend of mine gave 50 bucks to a homeless guy on campus during finals week. That same night, she saw him walking to his Audi, take off his tattered clothes, get in, and drive away. He was in his 30's.
