Ugh. Asthma

Ava has been coughing the last few days, a really dry cough but multiple times in a row. I called the Dr yesterday to see if I should bring her in, especially since we're going away tomorrow.

So they had me take her in this morning and I was totally not expecting this at all....but they think she might have asthma!!! This was one bullet my H and I were hoping to dodge. We have it on both sides of our families: my mom, MIL, BIL, my uncle, and both my nieces all have it.

Our Dr called it Reactive Respiratory Disease but said it's basically another term for asthma but she assured me it's treatable and easier to treat then years ago.

Now Ava is on an inhaler with a face mask thing 4 times a day. Another thing for me to take on our flight and have to deal with alone. Ugh. I'm really bummed out about this. My poor baby. :(

Are there any of you out there whose LO's have been diagnosed with this? Any tips for me?

Re: Ugh. Asthma

  • B hasn't been diagnosed, but did have to use an inhaler for a few weeks.  He wanted to fight it and even tossed it across the room a few times.  The best way we found to get him to chill out was sit Indian-style and put him in our laps.  Both arms around him helped pin his arms down without him realizing we were pinning them down.  We didn't ever put the mask on his face either- just close enough for him to breathe it in.  The doctor even said to let him scream because he'd get the medicine in better.  Ugh.

Good luck.  It really stinks you have to deal with it, but at least it's a treatable thing and much easier than when we were young.

  • Ugh I am sorry that Ava is having to deal with this. We haven't been officially diagnosed, but Cameron is on a nebulizer 3x a day as a "preventative measure" since he has had quite a few issues with his lungs the past few months. His ped said he is "on the fast track to asthma".

As far as the nebulizer goes, my biggest tip is to not worry about her getting the full dose, as every little bit helps. We don't put the mask on him, but hold it close to him so that most of it is directed at him. If he is extra squirmy we give him puffs or yogurt drops and he focuses on that and doesn't even realize he is breathing in.

I was able to buy a nebulizer at a pharmacy for $25, so maybe you can just buy one when you get there and just bring the medication? So that you don't have to fly with the machine?

Good luck! I hope she feels better soon.
