Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Teething

My little girl is 6.5 months now and has no teeth come through as yet. The last week she has been a lot more unsettled, crying a lot more and waking a lot more through the night a temp now and then and she seems to rub her eyes a lot even after having a nap. Its so hard not knowing if it is teething or something else . We had about 4 bad days then 2 good days and now another bad. My question is to the mothers to whose little ones have got there first tooths what were the symptoms your little ones were getting before they cut a tooth and when they started getting the symptoms how long till you could feel the tooth coming through.

Re: Teething

  • My LO had a low grade fever one day about a week before she cut her first tooth. During the day, as long as she had something to chew on she was pretty happy and able to soothe herself, but at night the night before she cut the tooth she woke up screaming but as soon as I went in and gave her her pacifier she fell back to sleep. Before that night, I have never had to go in and give it to her. I let her self soothe, and since she's stopped her MOTN feedings I've never gone into her room during the night until she cut a tooth. If that puts it in perspective for you. It'll come through soon! For us, she cut her first the Monday after Mother's Day and she just cut her second last week. So be prepared to go through the process all over again soon. But from what I've read, after the first 2 on bottom, typically it's about 2 months before the top 2 come in. :)

  • About two weeks before they showed up we had a few random bad days here it there. She would have a hard time sleeping, fussy, waking multiple times a night, rubbing her ears and jaw. Then two days before was horrible! She wouldn't sleep more than 20 minutes at a time for 24 hours. I gave her Tylenol when that happened, but I don't think it did much. She loved chewing on ice in her mesh feeder. Now she has two teeth on the bottom, and I hope the rest aren't as bad. DS was not that bad with teething. It was like "oh a tooth, when did that happen!" Ps I think the amber teething necklace is a joke. She's had the bracelet version on her ankle for months.

  • I blamed teething, without really knowing if it was, for about a month before we saw a tooth just last week. We could see white spots, but nothing definitive. I always felt like I was blaming teething because I really had no idea what else to do. Haha, but you are most likely right. Sounds like your LO is teething to me! Unfortunately, once that first one cuts through, it seems there are one or two more right behind it. So we don't get much relief. =)

All of the above plus occasional diareha.  DS started to gnaw on things around 3.5 mos. but the first tooth didn't break the skin until right around the 5 mos. mark.  He'd have a bad week then a good week.  He now has 4 bottom teeth and 3 on top.  His eye tooth is coming in and is really causing us fits.  He still has good days and bad days. Hang in there it's he!! on both of you.

  • My son started to become irritable easily. One second happy; then the next crying. I found it odd since he's normally a very happy baby when not sleepy. He never had a fever, but did get a diaper rash. He also woke often in the MOTN which he had been previously sleeping through. I realized it was teething and then frozen washcloths and soft toys did the trick. It lasted about two weeks and then we saw the caps of two bottom white teeth. He was fussy for about 1 week longer on an off.

  • We had pretty much the same experience as PPs, extra fussy, some wicked smelling and looking poops for about two weeks before they came through.  It's rough and she's been acting fussy and drooling way more this week so me thinks some more are on the way:(
  • My DD was not eating nearly as much as she usually does the week before I noticed her first tooth. She usually eats 8 oz bottles but would only drink 56 oz. I guess just not as much of an appetite.
  • Thanks everyone, its so nice to have some peoples opinions and advice on what you have been through. No teeth yet we had another bad night the other night but now 2 good nights :
  • My DD never gave me any warnings. They just poked through and surprised me. A tiny bit or drool and that is what made me look for them. I was recently told that they back ones hurt WAY WAY worse and the front four (what she has) dont hurt as much. I am assuming its because the back ones are larger and the push through will be a bigger hole to cut.....
