Re: TV time limits

Confession: now that I am pregnant, the tv has been on a lot more lately...

On a normal day, TV goes on in the morning while I am cooking breakfast/taking dog out/drinking coffee/tea and is on for about half hour to 45 minutes. TV is then turned back on around 4:00pm while I am cooking dinner and getting the house cleaned/picked up. It will stay on about an hour until we pick up DH from work.

DD does not spend the entire time watching it. She will occasionally look at it for a couple minutes then go back to playing with her toys. She will get up and dance whenever the show sings songs/plays music. It's cute.

Seriously, TV has been my saving grace with this god awful morning sickness. DD got upset when she saw me puking and came toddling into the bathroom crying. When I know I am going to be sick now, I jack up the volume and it will distract her.

  • DS wants nothing to do with TV.  If it's on he barely pays any attention.  Every once in awhile Jake and the Neverland Pirates keeps his attention for a minute or two, but nothing.  And trust me there are times when I turn it on hoping he will watch it so I can cook dinner ot do something!

DD on the other hand is so different.  Sophia the first comes on and she's mesmerized by the TV.  Usually during the week we don't do TV at all while they're still up and if we do it is only a half hour.  On the weekends though it is on more.

  • My horrible confession of the day. My TV is on all day however 95% of the time, he couldn't care less and isn't paying attention anyway. I can't handle a silent house, it just bothers me. I should probably just buy a radio :-/
  • DD watches one 20 min episode of Mickey Mouse clubhouse after her nap. I have 40 episodes on DVR so I can turn it on whenever she gets up. Otherwise we listen to the toddler tunes radio station for background noise most of the day.

Ccip that is pretty much exactly what I do. I like to drink my cappuccino or get ready for work in peace! And I definitely turned it on more once I got pregnant. But C is enthralled by the TV so I clearly need some limits. And he cried when I was puking too. :[ Hugs, it'll get better!!

Thanks :) As far as time limits goes, I do not think C is watching too much TV. Maybe after turning it off, you can switch to a music CD? E loves dancing around the family room to any type of music. I think anything that will momentarily distract him might help-like snacks, books, music, etc.

  • DD has always been enthralled with the tv. Lately, she has been paying too much attention to my shows. She has also started to throw tantrums when I don't put one of her shows on. I just started limiting it to Sesame Street in the morning, one Mickey Mouse clubhouse in the afternoon. And she's always watched about 10 minutes of classical baby before bedtime. I also have been putting toddler tunes music station on for background noise during the day. On a related note, DD wouldn't go to bed last night until almost 10. We put monsters inc on for the first time and she loved it! She might be able to go to the movie theatre sooner than we thought...

DD2 still isn't really interested in the TV. She does like to play with my ipad, but mostly wants to look at pictures or short video clips we've taken. DD1 watches one 20 minute cartoon in the morning and one in the evening. That's it. DD2 can watch whatever she's watching, but she is not really interested.

Alex has no interest in watching TV at all and it's never on.

The pedi said at his 18 month check-up that TV time should be limited to 1 hour or less per day at this age.

  • Depends on what is going on, if DS or I are ill then it is on way more, but on a normal weekday the TV is off until 7pm, then it is on for about an hour until dinner, when it is turned off again until DS goes to bed.

At the weekend it is on more as DH can't cope with no background noise, it is irritating as DS is really starting to pay attention to it, I try to get us out of the house as often as possible so it's not on too much.

DS is not interested in any particular show, the only kids show we have on with any regularity is Sesame street, it calms him down and distracts him really well, but if it's not on he doesn't notice.

Diagnosed with Anti little c antibodies. DS1 7.11.11 - Anaemia and Jaundice. 10 days in the NICU, 1 exchange transfusion and 4 blood transfusions. DS2 29.8.13 - Anaemia 7 days in the NICU and 1 exchange transfusion. Both are now happy and healthy.

  • DS doesn't really watch TV shows tho we have a couple of Bubble Guppies and Mickey Mouse on the DVR for the occassional play. He does, however, love movies. He asks for Nemo constantly. He was really sick a few months back, and then had tubes and whatnot, and we watched movies when he was sick and I think we got him hooked, whoops! He never watches the whole thing, probably 30-45 min and rarely (unless sick or tired) pays total attention, but he's seen Finding Nemo, Cars, Cars 2, Ratatoille and the Toy Story's in part or whole sometime over the last few months.

  • DD has a favorite Elmo/Sesame Street DVD that she loves and will point at the tv and ask for Elmo if it's not on.  I usually don't turn on anything for her other than that DVD or Baby Einstein which she loves.  She probably watches a couple of 30 minute DVD's a day.  I try not to feel too guilty if she watches more one day because there are other days we don't turn the tv on at all.  I know it's going to be a harder balance as she gets older though, and cartoons become more appealing.  I've already noticed her taking more of an interest in the tv.
