Success after IF

IVF w/ ICSI question

Hey ladies!

Being this board is Success after infertility, I was wondering if any of you ladies have dealt with MFI particularly zero morphology. We are attending an IVF seminar next week, and possibly an adoption seminar in a few weeks. We need to decide what is our best route at becoming parents.

Any success stories with IVF or IVF w/ ICSI with zero morphology? If yes, how many attempts did it take? How did you go about paying for IVF?

Thanks :)

Re: IVF w/ ICSI question

  • We did IVF+ICS due to MFI in 2008 (resulting in DD1).  I can't remember DH's morphology, all I remember is that everything looked bad!  We were completely OOP but got a 10% "military discount" - luckily, we got a BFP the first cycle.  We did just get a BFN from a FET with an embryo from that cycle, but there are many factors to consider.  I would look at the numbers they give you (statistics and finances) and then think about where you'd be willing to draw the line.  For me, I felt like I had to try IVF+ICSI at least once.  And then had 2 miracle surprise BFPs.  You just never know.  Good luck!

    Me – 33 (no diagnosis), DH – 41 (MFI)

    IVF #1/ICSI 2008 – 22 ER, 21 F, Day 3 transfer (8A and 8B) - BFP, 3 Frosties

    Surprise BFP 2010

    Surprise BFP 2011

Shipped frosties from TX to VA in 2012

FET #1 May 2013, single blast – BFN

    FET #2 August 2013 2 blasts – BFN

    IVF #2/ICSI/AH Jan 2014 – 8 ER, 7M, 6 F Day 3 transfer (grade 2 & 3), no frosties - BFP!

  • Dh's first SA showed 0 percent morph, and we were originally told IVF probably wouldn't work. I researched and got dh on a new vitamin regimen, he cut out pop, and his retest a couple months later showed 2 percent morph. His other numbers were decent, so we pursued iui first...and were successful.

I don't know your specifics and I know we didn't do ivf, but I just wanted to offer hope. Did they say 0 or 0 percent? Because less than 1 percent still means you could have several hundred thousand with good morph! That was really important for me to remember. And the cutoff they wanted was only 4 percent, so a small increase was actually a huge difference.

Fwiw, we would have done icsi.

    Best of luck!

I can't remember DHs morph but I know it was very low, all of his numbers were very low. We were told our best shot at a biological child was IVF so we went for it. We did ICSI and all 6 eggs we got from me were fertilized that way. Only one grew really well but that resulted in DS.

We were completely OOP and saved money before going through with it. DH didn't want to go into debt but we were fortunate to be able to put my entire paycheck for three months back to pay for it.

I agree to get all of the stats first and ask questions before deciding. You really never know what will happen.

ETA: this was our first IVF attempt.

  • This was our exact diagnosis. We went straight to IVF w/ ICSI and had success on our second cycle with lots of frosties leftover. Insurance covered our first cycle, we paid for our second. Best decision we ever made. We plan on doing our first FET for baby #2 next spring. GL! Although 0% morph is a scary dx, there are still good success rates!
dx: MFI 0% morph & low count. Occasional Anovulatory cycles.

  • I don't remember our exact numbers, but they were low across the board.  We did one cycle of IVF with ICSI and it was successful.  Our insurance covered all but about $3k of the IVF costs and all but like $200 of the meds.

  • Thanks for all of your responses! I feel much more optimistic than I did a few days ago. We start our final IUI #4 cycle/monitoring tomorrow (insurance covers 100% but new insurance starts after that). I look forward to having some time off from TTC while we save up money, but now I am definitely looking forward to the next step whenever that may be :)

We did IVF with ICSI due to 2% morph. We went straight to IVF and have a beautiful two year old son. We paid 100% out of pocket and wrote a check. I had positive betas with our first fet, but had a missed miscarriage at 10 weeks. We have two more frosties.
