Milk already in??!? Bra issues

I went to a Motherhood Store to find a bra or two for after baby is born. The town I live in has a horrible selection of nursing bras and maternity stuff in general! The largest size you can find is a 40DD which isn't gonna cut it for me. I tried on a 44 F at motherhood at a mall two hours away in Richmond while we were visiting family which fit comfortably but the salesperson told me to get a smaller band size as my ribs are more expanded than they will be after baby which I get. I asked how much room there should be in the bra for when my milk comes in and she told me it was already in! That they might get bigger for a couple days after the birth and then go back to what they are. Does that even make sense???

  • Um, no....Your milk is not already in. That will happen after LO arrives, anywhere from 2 days to a week. Mine came in on day 4 or 5 and I believe that is pretty average. If you pump you will see the change from colostrum to a mixture then to milk as well.

Also, my breast were a lot bigger once my milk did come in. In the beginning they were porn star big, massive but once we got into a routine and my supply evened out my breasts did calm down but were still definitely bigger and more mass then during pregnancy. Although, I do have really squishy boobs to begin with so BFing gave me more junk upfront.

I would wait to purchase a lot of bras until after your supply is established.

  • Sorta. A few days after birth you go through engorgement and at least for me my size went insane for a few days before calming back down a bit.  I personally would wait to buy bras as my pregnant size was diff from my post engorgement size, but maybe I'm weird.

When your milk comes in you will know it. They will get HUGE. At least mine did. The saleslady is right that your band size will decrease. Your boobs will settle some too. Its best to just have nursing tanks and the stretchy band nursing bras for the first 2-3 weeks until your supply regulates some. Then go get a fitting. At the end of my first PG I was a 38 DDish (started out at 34D) then when I did go get a nursing bra fitting 2-3 months after DD was born I was a 32G! So it can change, ALOT.

  • Thanks ladies. I thought it sounded a little nuts... I only bought two bras and two stretchy sleep ones because I figured things could change. I have to drive over an hour to the nearest maternity store and the thought of doing so with a newborn does not appeal to me. I guess I'll just have to deal with it when the time comes!
  • If i were you, i would wait until you have the baby and your size settles.  Then, i would head over to a department store for a bra fitting and then just order bras online.  It's important to get the right fit for your nursing bras so you don't get clogged ducts.  I know they say not to get underwire, but for the larger sizes, you really need it.  If the bra is fit properly, you should not have problems with clogged ducts.

  • I couldn't find bras big enough to get me though my pregnancy so I caved and went to motherhood where I bought 4 nursing bras. I'm 33 weeks and busting at the seams! I have since found a reputable source for nursing bras (a very nice private shop around the corner) and I will be heading there in a few weeks for a new fitting. I refuse to shop at motherhood anymore, they just keep p*ssing me off with their high prices and poor quality.
  • I don't think that makes sense either but I was told at motherhood maternity that I wouldn't need a bigger bra size that what I'm wearing now.  I'm at a 38DD and I said something about getting a size up because of when the milk comes in and seh said no.  So I didn't- but I'm wearing it today bc it's super cute and I might as well get use out of it- and it's kind of tight.  Guess we'll see.

Yup. The sales person doesn't know what they are talking about. Your milk isn't even close to in.

    Agree with Rumble.

I had a friend ask me the other day if I've started preparing my nipples, and then she went on to describe it to me, but I am quite confident at this point my breasts are still empty.

Preparing your nipples?!?!? What on earth does that mean??

I don't think I've gotten a ton bigger since being pregnant, it's more my band size that had to change because of my ribs. I used to be a 38DD and now 44s are the only bras I can stand to wear... I will wait because it sounds like things are definitely going to change.

You DON'T need to prepare your nipples. Leave them be. It amazes me people still talk like that.
