High-Risk Pregnancy

Bicornate Uterus

I'm 17 weeks pregnant with a baby boy my doctor believes I have a bicornate uterus. She has suggested injections of progesterone to reduce the chance of preterm labor by 50 percent. These injections are costly not covered by insurance. I wonder if any of you ladies have or are going through anything similar have advice for me before I make a decision.

I agree, ask about progesterone suppositories if you're worried about cost. Your doc is the professional and I don't think it would be wise to decide against their professional opinion. This is all for the health of your baby and worth every penny you will pay out of pocket.

I don't know what health insurance you have, but for every out of pocket expense I pay for a service/prescription that isn't covered, it goes towards my deductible. Did you ask your carrier if that applies to you?

I delivered my first at 35 wks and was put on injections for my second, which I believe is what helped me carry to full term. This pregnancy my doc prescribed suppositories.

I hope you make the right decision, good luck!
  • Did your doctor's office tell you how much they would be?  I'm about to start mine and my first round wasn't covered by insurance (long story).  For 5 weeks worth of injections it cost me $65 OOP.  That's not bad at all in my opinion.

  • Thanks for all the positive advice. My doc was able to find a carrier with an 80 a month price which is much more reasonable compared to what she originally told me of course I want to do anything that will help the baby go to full term. I am very relieved.

I only deleted the other post due to negative responses. Not all were negative but It was my first post was hoping for kinder responses. Sorry if anyone thought it was rude to delete.

Do you have a history of pre-term labor? I have a bicornuate uterus and delivered my son at 39w6d.  My doctors never suggested anything about progesterone shots.  I did have an extra ultrasound at 24 weeks to check cervical length, but everything was normal.  Have you had your anatomy scan yet?  Maybe you could ask them to check your cervical length - if it looks like it is prematurely shortening, then you could do the shots.  But if it looks normal, maybe recheck in a few weeks?

  • Good luck and prayers to u and a ur baby. My husband and I found out yesterday that we were having twins two diferent placentas. I am 5 weeks and also have a Bicornuate Uterus. The nurse didnt tell me anything specific just that i need closer monitoring. My levels are 15,709 and 27.56 she said thats good. I will go see doctor again tomorrow. We are in shock we lost twins in one placenta 2 years ago... It was a wonderful feeling to see the sonogram. I feel your worryness but lets be positive! Good Luck we all scared but we will make it thru any advise is welcome please!
  • I also have a BU and went to 39w with DD- planned c section for breech.  BUT my OB didn't know I had a bicornuate until my c-sec.  This time I'm being monitored by a MFM and this baby is in the other side- so they have said this is like never being pregnant before.  Hopefully there won't be any complications this time around.  Good luck!
