Hi all
I have been diagnosed with GD at 31 weeks, and I have to be honest that I took the news pretty badly. I had a scare early in my pregnancy but have since felt great, and wasn't expecting to be dealing with GD.
I am ready and willing to do whatever it takes though, to keep my sweet girl healthy, but my concern is whether getting a reasonably late diagnosis will cause any issues?
Obviously the intention is to control the GD with diet, and meds if required, but given I will be 32 weeks before I even see the dietician, could there already be damage done?
Can't help but feel I have let me little girl down, even though I know it's out of my control.
Re: New here, with GD diagnosis question
I felt like I was failing my DS as well. I cried a lot those first two weeks after the GD diagnosis.
I would talk to your OB about any concerns.
If you follow the OB and your GD counselor's direction, you and baby should be healthy.
Whenever I tell someone I have GD, they always tell me a story about a friend or family member they know who had it and had perfectly healthy kids.
It is hard when you have first been diagnosed. It will get better.
When you've been married this long, you need a ticker to remind you.

Hugs! Sorry about the GD diagnosis. Did your OB give you any information at all besides a referral to the dietician? Like a sheet with a recommended meal plan or recommended carb intake for each meal and snack? Mine handed me a nutrition booklet and a sheet with their daily carb recommendations in addition to the dietician referral. It wouldn't hurt to call them and ask if they have additional information to give you about GD until you can meet with the dietician. And in the meantime, eat as healthy as possible. Cut out as much sugar as possible, stick to healthy and whole grain carbs, vegetables, and good amounts of healthy protein.
Don't worry about any damage done previously. It is really in the last several weeks of growth where it is really critical to keep things in check to keep the baby from packing on extra weight. You will be fine.
I was also diagnosed later than average- I think I was 31 weeks or so, maybe a week or two later. Like you, I was very worried about what damage could have already been done.
I have had some monitoring done, and will continue to have NSTs and BPPs twice weekly. Hopefully your doctor and the dietician can help ease your fears.
